desolate on Kickstarter
desolate is a hand-painted 2D puzzle adventure game influenced by my experiences, emotions, and my acceptance of self growing up. The game told in seven acts, Desolation, The Desolate, Deception, Corruption, Consumption, Depression, and Realisation.

desolate is also on Kickstarter! head over to to back us.

In the beginning of the game shadowy figures have invaded your village and you must sacrifice your friends and family to them in order to escape. After realising what you’ve done wrong you need to fix the mistakes you’ve made. But not all mistakes can be fixed by apologising. Sometimes change is needed, but reluctantly sought. Sooner or later you will have to face your inner shadows and your inner self to change for the better.

Use the three core interactions of sound, gesture, and touch to communicate with its inhabitants. The core mechanics you have never change, what does change with each Act is what is needed of you and how you interact with the different inhabitants of the world, and settings.
  • Touch
Where you might shake the hand of a fellow friend you will try to pat the little cave creature on the head, both of which are done with the Touch button. Touch can also be used to push large boulders out of the way.

  • Speak
Where the call of your voice might reassure a family member in trouble and make them try to get to you, the call of your voice might scare the same little cave creature and make him run away.

  • Gesture
Where you can gesture a friend to distract them, you will gesture a cave creature to come towards you.

  • Platforming elements
There are also platforming elements to the game. You can walk and run around the levels, jump forwards a short distance if walking or a longer distance if running; or jump straight up if you’re standing still.

Experience the gorgeous world inspired by the vast landscapes of New Zealand, and the uniquely confined architecture of Tokyo.
Featuring a beautiful score by New Zealand musician Ben Tolich.

One of the biggest features in desolate is that the whole game is hand-painted. The landscape for desolate has been influenced by where I live and where I am from. I am originally from New Zealand, which has a beautiful landscape, so I put that into the game using references from the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. I am currently living in Tokyo Japan which has some very small buildings and spaces but the most amazing culture. The buildings featured in desolate are all found around Tokyo. Other parts of the game feature caves from both Nippara and Arizona. Both incredibly beautiful natural formations.

Thanks for checking out desolate, please support us to get through Greenlight.

This game reminds me of 2 other games I saw decades ago. Another World is one of them.

I voted no because the video doesn't seem to have any actual gameplay in it. Unless this is the world's best walking-a-bit-and-then-sitting-under-a-tree simulator. If it's a puzzle game it would be nice to see some of the puzzles, if it's an adventure game it'd be cool to see some of the dialogue. It looks very nice though, but the trailer makes the game seem about as interactive as a screensaver.

Huh. So you do let people sort of partake very personal memories and stages of your very life. I presume, that is something that's to be respected .

So far I do love the well-made and colorful graphic design , yet the trailer does lack actual gameplay . Fluent, smooth gameplay is just crucial after all.
But, that aside, I'm also really digging the music in this game. The slightly melancholic yet somehow at the same time kind of joyful music helps soothing ones nerves.

The implied elements (Speak, Gesture, Platforming) seems to leave up a lot of room to operate with, so I'd consider myself as curious about how this game will eventually turn out.

Good luck with the game InkBit , and congratulations for leaving your inner darkness behind eventually.

The art style and music I really like, the gameplay seems a little limited from the video I saw, though. Voted Yes, with reservations.
