The Caretaker started out as a crazy idea to make a game for the OUYA within a week. Due to our work schedules though trying to find a solid week where we could work on our game was just darn near impossible. We realized that our schedule was going to have to stretch, and since we were stretching our time frame we might as well give the game a lot more content.

The Story: Jake Unders is starting his first night as a groundskeeper at the local cemetery. Upon arriving at his new job he is informed that he isn't just an ordinary groundskeeper, he has unknowingly joined an Ancient and Secret guild of Caretakers. The Caretaker’s job is not to maintain the cemetery, but to keep it’s residents happy. Most of all to keep them IN the cemetery. But who would believe any of this?

Of course Jake doubts everything he is told. It isn't until he is left alone for the night that he meets his first spirit, and mentor, Abel Dustman. Abel was once a Caretaker as well and it is a tradition for one or two to stick around after death to help out the new blood. Darkness lurks in the cemetery and Jake must root it out whilst still performing his normal duties as a Caretaker.

The player takes control of Jake in a third person adventure style of game-play. The tools he is given from the start are: a Lantern used as a shield, a Shovel used for close proximity combat, and a Holy Water Gun used for ranged combat.

The health system in The Caretaker is Jake's energy level. The spirits do not physically hurt Jake, but drain his energy with each attack. To counter this Jake can drink coffee or eat protein bars to recover his health.

Of course these restorative items aren't free. Inside of Jake’s workshop there is a vending machine that holds all of these items. To earn money to purchase these items Jake must collect the money that some of the spirits drop throughout the cemetery. This money is what the spirits use to pay the Ferryman in order to pass onto the next world however, so most of the spirits aren't exactly eager to give it up.

Throughout the game the player will have the ability to upgrade their gear by trading in some of this dropped money. Currently the plan is to offer upgrades to the Lantern’s shield strength, upgrade the shovel’s attack strength, and increase the number of bottles of Holy Water Jake can carry for his water gun.

The cemetery isn't exactly a normal cemetery though. The people entombed here liked their privacy almost as much as they liked their secrets. Most of the residents have taken their secrets with them into this afterlife. The cemetery is segmented into different areas, each with their own theme and puzzles. A hedge maze in a cemetery? Why not.

I believe this game has lots of potential, I know that sounds like something someone would say to not hurt you feelings, but sadly I am using it in that way. "Caretaker" from what the video shows is a 2k14 walking simulater, I understand that you were limited to a week, but as far as I know, unfinished games being realesed on steam, is not what people want to see. Perhaps now you have the idea down, you may improve upon it, it's not like you only have a week, and when that's over you never touch the game again, right? if that's not the case perhaps you can shine it up a bit, or change the intro video, I want to say yes to this game, but it feels....unfinished. It most likely is, and I'm just rambling on. So sadly as it is, I'm going to have to say no, atleast until there's some big change to it, that's my answer.

Upon arriving at his new job, Jake is informed that he isn't just an ordinary groundskeeper, he has unknowingly joined an Ancient and Secret guild of Caretakers, who can walk through closed gates with ease.

OMG those walking animations! LMAO! Graphicly this game needs A LOT of work! The story sounds interesting so I'm saying ask me again later. BTW loved the music!

This game looks seriously amazing. Our entire team is really impressed, and this is easily one of the best looking games coming to the OUYA in the near future. The art style is especially epic. Yes voted x10000.

Want to see more action, for example fight scenes, puzzles, that kinda thing. Sounds intriguing though. Graphics are really cool.

I'm tempted to upvote it given the written content in the discription, and I read your Q&A, but I still need visiual proof that the game is going to be as good as you say. Yes, the graphics need improvment as well. The one thing that stopped me was during the very long walking trailer the hero walked right through a closed gate. A few times. I see that there's wall barriers, but there's no search or determination if the giant gates are... Not gates. (Unless you happened to "unlock" them off screen, in whichcase you need to improve your animations by... a lot.) I believe it would help if you posted concept art for the characters.

The game looks like a good Idea, however there wasn't much to look at in terms of an adventure game. Plus the game might improve once it reaches beta phases since you can walk through gates at the moment apparently.
