Doom 2 Cosmetic Enhancements
By Snake
Tired of Brutal Doom? Beautiful Doom too intrusive visually? Looking for vanilla gameplay with a subtle facelift? This guide contains a small collection of cosmetic modifications that make Doom 2 look better without pushing too much extra visuals in your face. To make use of all the features described in this guide, you should run GZDoom, an enhanced engine source port. The modifications have been tested on GZDoom 1.8.X.
Contents, original author credits
This guide links to a small collection of mods, or a mod pack. Those are bits and pieces collected from other people's mods. This is not my work, I only handpicked and put together the individual parts I wanted from larger mods made by others.

I would like to get the credits out of the way before moving on to anything else. This collection contains the following enhancements:

  • Brightmap images by Z86 (SBrightmaps.pk3)
  • NC Hud v1.4 mod by BlueShadow (nc_custom_hud_v1.4.pk3)
  • Liquid flat warping and Imp fireball sprite from Beautiful Doom 5.3 by Jekyll Grim Payne (individual lumps from BDoom_Monsters.wad)
  • PLAYPAL color palette from Tormentor667's Stronghold[] mod
  • Eriance's gun mod by Eriance
  • BloodFix mod original DECORATE code by Cyanosis, Cacos and Hell Nobles blood color altered to better match the palette
  • Guide logo image by Tormentor667
Screenshots of changed elements
Here are a few screens showing the things the mod pack alters:

Softer blue color from the new palette, warping liquids. Lava, nukage, blood and slime warp and animate the same way. New shotgun sprite. New HUD elements. Health and armor bars on the left, ammo bar on the right. Loving the Doomguy face!

Appropriately colored blood for Cacos and Barons / Hell Knights. Marine face in HUD changing with damage taken. Super shotgun sprite in second shot.

Brightmap example. Certain elements / areas of textures are always brightly lit / at full brightness regardless of sector lighting. It only makes sense that a torch or a lamp that is part of a texture should be lit in the dark. Monster eyes and certain attack frames also go fullbright. Pistol sprite.

New Imp fireball sprite. FX trails from Beautiful Doom have been removed, leaving only the dynamic light code, so it integrates seamlessly into a GZDoom install with dynamic lights enabled.
Setup and download
This guide assumes you know how to work with WAD and PK3 mods. If you don't, this is a great place to start and learn how to use a convenient front end that manages your mod and map files:

The mods from this guide have ONLY been tested with GZDoom[]. The majority of the changes should work with regular ZDoom as they use DECORATE scripting that works in ZDoom as well. However, the brightmaps and possibly other features NEED GZDoom, so just use that one.

The compressed file containing all the mod files can be found here:

As we all know, free file hosts like to do things with files, so if this link goes dead at any point in time and you want the files, don't hesitate to add me or comment so I can reupload.

The mods contained in the file are:
currydoom.wad - contains new imp fireball, warping liquids, new color palette.
eriguns.pk3 - contains Eriance's excellent gun replacement. The weapons are COSMETIC, they don't do extra damage, don't fire excessively fast, etc. They're virtually sprite replacements that mimic the behavior of default weapons very closely.
nc_custom_hud_v1.4.pk3 - contains an older version of the HUD that doesn't need extra tweaking to work with Eriance's guns
SBrightmaps.pk3 - contains the brightmap files

If you feel like you want to use just parts of the package, feel free to load just a couple of the files provided. If you want to remove individual components / lumps from currydoom.wad, you can use Simon Judd's amazingly convenient SLADE lump editor[] and edit, delete and move lumps within any mod package.

If you have any further questions, don't hesitate to send me a friend request or ask me anything in the comment section.

Happy Dooming!

I'm currently running GZDoom with gz-qtilt.pk3, Smooth Doom and my own ripped-off alternative Imp fireball. I no longer have the files used in this guide due to a hdd crash.

Is there any way to get the enhancements without chaning the gun models?

Hey man, it's my own mashup of other people's work, made to taste. I've since ditched it and use a different mod setup.

Hello. I think currydoom is a nice touch but I was wondering how you found it. I could not find any info on it online anywhere.

I've tried using GZDoom on it's own (Well, I might have added ketchup) and there were no sprites at all, the proper sounds were there, but nothing else, any ideas?

all you need to do is copy paste the link outside of the steam in your web browser! it works fine thanks Snake!

It's missing because Steam is a gigantic pile of shit and obviously now removes Mediafire links. I may upload a new version at some point. I added custom persistent splashes for all liquids in my personal mod pack.

The download link is missing.
