Roadmap and Stress Testing Round 2
Stress Test Dates and Information
What You'll Be Able to Do During Stress Tests:

Explore - Our town and its surroundings, the map is around 6sq km at the moment just big enough to roam about and for us to gather information we need.

Loot - The looting system is in, although it’s just the tip of the iceberg, loot does randomly spawn. Containers currently consist only of crates, this is easily extendable and will be by our next test build. You’ll be able to loot any “container” IE dressers, kitchen cabinets etc. etc.

Gunplay - Shoot em’ while you can! We’ve not implemented our mental health system so for the time being and to test server load you will be able to kill each other. This will be a great time to test bullet damage vs. ammunition in the game world. We hope to find a nice balance.

Doors - Doors are in, they’re not yet lockable but will be shortly. We’ll turn to the community for some ideas on just how this should be done. Currently we’re thinking some type of key’d system every structure would contain a key to said structure.

Tree felling - Every tree in the world is fellable, after felling players can chop trunks into logs, craft logs into firewood and kindling. This is the base system for interactive non-fixed objects and will eventually lead to object placement, generators, crates and other interactive objects placed by the player.

Fire - Burn baby burn! After felling a tree and crafting some firewood, start a fire to brighten up the dark nights. These fires will shortly control your structure's temperature and maintaining a fire on cold nights in the future will be a must. Campfires, fireplaces and wood stoves are all usable. Campfires are static at the moment until we extend crafting which is currently being worked on. This is also testing our machine interaction mechanic, taking, removing and using fuels will be an essential part to the gameplay.

Chat - Very basic form of it. Strictly text-based for the tests, this will soon be extended to voice chat. Deeper still, it will rely on radios, both handheld and house/vehicle based.

Menu systems - Mostly all in at the moment, you’ll access our bug reporting system via the menu so leaving the game to report bugs isn’t an issue.

Sound - Sounds are in, thanks to @Liam he has done some fantastic work and if we’re honest until about two weeks ago we completely forgot the need for SFX in a game! So Liam has been a bit rushed ;)

While testing these features you’ll also be testing and stressing some of our core game mechanics, foundations for future features and gameplay. All of our scripts are written from the ground up to ensure optimal use across the boards, the same mechanic that controls fire wood burning times will in the future control fuel levels in generators and vehicles etc.

What we want from you - Test, test, test!! Jump, run, shoot, loot, open and close doors and chests, start fires and put them out. Let's see how many players we can get on a server, how many trees we can chop down and so on.

Reporting issues - Done right through our in game menus you’ll be linked to a bit bucket, please include detailed information when reporting a bug and before you do so, check the bugs already posted. You’ll be able to up and down vote issues. This will allow us to prioritize our response to larger bugs and leave the smaller ones for later. If possible include detailed system info, detailed explanation and if possible a screen shot of the issue.

Youtubers/Streamers - Please do not stream or record our stress test builds. These builds are not an ideal representation of Survive the Nights. They’re very basic and just the cornerstone of what the game will become.

Can’t download or you’re having issues with the build? - If you’re simply unable to link your account and download a build, please PM @JB_ with your backer information including the email address associated with your pre-order and he will sort it ASAP.

Technical issues - You’ve downloaded the build but something has gone wrong and you can’t play: please PM @Jayty with system information and the exact issue you’re having.

Please keep in mind, initial builds might not work for everyone right away! This is one of the reasons behind stress testing, we’re a small team with a small budget and we don't have the money to test on anything more than what we develop on. So it’s possible there could be some GPU or system conflicts that need sorting. You’ll be the ones to report these issues.

Disclaimer - Once again, these builds in no way, shape or form represent what Survive the Nights will become. This isn’t an alpha build; it’s hardly a pre-alpha build. It’s strictly set up to test rigs and stress and that’s what we plan on doing with it. Like we’ve said from the start, we’ll not release anything until the team and you (the current backers) are happy with it. We’ll not release another “Early Access” game that just isn’t working well. WE together as a team will build something we can be proud of, something enjoyable and most of all FUN!

Further testing - This is just the first round of testing and you can expect more shortly, next we’ll likely work on fortification and AI for hunting. Animals will be in before zombies, they’ll be a nice test on stress and path finding. We want our zombies to be as smooth as possible when they’re introduced. We also want to find a nice balance between threat and annoyance. You can expect another test come September with our first solid alpha builds coming around the holidays if all goes to plan.

In Closing-Once again, apologies for the delays. This isn’t just our game, it’s yours too. This is what we feel will separate STN from the rest in the genre, we ARE listening to you; we do our best to communicate. Enjoy our build and please remember this isn’t Survive the Nights...it’s just the start of what STN will become! :)

Description
"Survive the Nights" at a glance:

  • First-person multiplayer
  • Community based
  • Realistic survival techniques
  • Unique gameplay
  • Windows and Mac builds

We want this game to feel real but we remain true to the promise that it will always be fun. The game will have a large, dedicated and persistent server world. The game as of now is island based, this will allow us to release alpha builds sooner. We're in the process of designing our first island now. We've had a good deal of success with an ocean based landscape. Islands will be added to the world and players will need to craft or find ships to traverse between them. It's very important to us that the world is full and alive. Everything we design and everything we want to achieve with "Survive the Nights" has a meaning and a purpose. The following is a list of some realistic survival activities and characteristics that we're including in the game.

    Structures

  • Every structure is enterable and unique
  • Every structure is fortifiable
  • Boards, planks and furniture can be used to fortify structures
  • Booby traps for structures you've invested time into
  • Store your found items in buildings and vehicles
  • No uninhabitable spaces

    Vehicles

All vehicles are potentially usable. We want vehicles to really have a meaning. They won't be hard to come by, but you might have a problem getting any of them to run. We have planned and implemented an extensive parts list for anything on wheels. Vehicles can also be used as mobile camps carrying all of your goods in their trunks or truck beds. Leaving your fully-stocked car in the wild, unlocked, would be a terrible idea. Removing a part or two should keep it pretty safe. Items can be stored in trunks and truck beds. So you found a nice pile of old barn wood? That'd be great to use when boarding up all those doors and windows back home. You can't stick ten planks into a backpack, right? But you can fit plenty into the bed of a truck or the trunk of a car. Vehicles will be worth their weight in gold in our world so make sure that you take care of yours.

  • All vehicles can be repaired or modified.
  • All vehicles are fuel based and require and use fuel.
  • All vehicles require numerous parts to function.

    Crafting

Another aspect of the game that we have included is extensive item combining and crafting.

  • Combine household items to create tools or weapons
  • Combine and modify parts for vehicles and equipment

    Multiplayer

  • Persistent servers
  • Character customization
  • White flag and mental health system to discourage KoS behavior
  • Structure ownership
  • Lockable containers
  • Band together to better your chances

    Day and night cycles

    During the day
  • Gather food and water
  • Gather planks and board up windows and doorways
  • Set traps around the perimeter of your structures
  • Board up structures
  • Fuel up your generators and repair the structures electrical panel
  • Day-cycle activities define your chances of surviving night cycle

    During the night
  • Start your generators to provide light and heat
  • Activate any surrounding traps or device
  • Find your favorite vantage point
  • Murder anything that moves

    Food/Calorie intake

Food and calorie intake will be a part of your daily routine. Realism will be maintained here. If a player doesn't eat for a few hours he won't die but will become sluggish. Death from starvation should take a number of days at minimum. The opposite also being true, a traveler with a high calorie diet will move faster, aim better and carry more weight.

  • Trapping small animals
You'll be able to set small traps with the hopes of catching small game like rabbit, squirrel, rat, moles, etc.
  • Hunt larger game
Go on the hunt for larger animals like deer, fox, sheep, etc.
  • Fish in lakes and ponds
Find lakes and ponds use a crafted fishing pole or a found one to go fishing
  • Find canned goods and preserved food supplies
Scavenge canned and dried goods from all of our abandoned buildings, stores and homes
  • Forage for wild berries and edibles (some may kill you so you better Google it)
Berries and edible plants may provide that extra burst of energy you really need or they may make your small intestine come shooting out of your nose
  • Take to streams to fill water bottles or activate well pumps in homes to access the water supply

    Maintain body temperature

Our island is set in a colder climate and our weather system is fully dynamic. Keeping your body temperature up in the colder months will be necessary for survival.

  • Start campfires in the wild
  • Power home heating systems
  • Find shelter to conserve heath

    Maintain physical state
Broken bones, limbs or bad cuts will make your survival bloody and painful.

    Maintain mental state
  • Killing other players will eventually result in a mental breakdown
  • Blurred vision, shaking hands, voices only the player hears

    Leveling/XP

An important aspect of any multiplayer game is leader boards, achievements and leveling your character in order to move up in rank. People like being number one in stuff, right? Survive the most nights to gain server wide rep. Level your character to better your skills.

  • Leveling up will be old school. Do something enough and you'll get better at it.
  • Hunt to improve your trapping abilities
  • Shoot to improve your accuracy
  • Trap a lot to improve your return rate
  • Fortify a lot to improve your carpentry skills. You get the idea right?

    Weapons, tools and machinery

Tools and machinery can be used for many things. You'll need certain tools to fortify homes and buildings, certain machinery to power homes or access water supplies.
There will be a large array of weapons. One thing that we've already had some success working with is using every day items as weapons. You'll be hard pressed to find yourself in a situation where you can't defend your life with a weapon of some type. Being able to place window boards quickly and without worrying about powering the structure first could be the difference between life and death.

    Communications

Text based chat will always be available, voice based chat will only be possible if you have the right equipment.

  • Two way radios will enable voice chat
  • CB radios reach a wider range
