Introduction

Greetings Everyone, I know a lot of you have been waiting very patiently for this update on where things are at the moment and I hope it answers a lot of your questions.



Where Marooned is at the moment

What's been done so far

For those of you who have been following from the start know that Marooned had a Kickstarter project which unfortunately fell short of its funding mark. This was a bit of a setback however it has not deterred me from continuing with the project. When Marooned was first posted onto Greenlight it was little more than a proof of concept tech demo with little to no gameplay implemented. Now I can safely say it's looking more like a fully fledged game complete with menus, animals, gameplay mechanics and of course the multiplayer aspect. I have added some new screenshots to the gallery to illustrate some of these features, with more to come.

What there is left to do

One of the biggest qualm's I have with a lot of survival games is that once you have established your impenetrable base and have enough supplies to hibernate through 1000 winters the game starts to lose a bit of its charm. So for Marooned I'm aiming to make this a starting point for part of the experience. Once you have enough resources, it will then be time to start exploring the world, solving puzzles in lost temples, interacting with the various tribes and finally finding a way to escape the island. In essence I want progression to be a really important part of the game. More on this in a future update.



CRYENGINE V

This is a great release for CRYENGINE which means even greater things for Marooned. For those who aren't regular followers of the engine, Crytek has released full source and shader access for the Engine. This means that some of the biggest problems I have had with the engine I will now be able to resolve. While most importantly begin working on a more interesting ocean both from a visual and gameplay standpoint, let's just say your little wooden raft isn't going to hold up well in a storm.



Why you hardly hear from me

I fit as much time as I possibly can into working on Marooned, outside of that I'm busy with my final years of studying for my computer science degree as well as working a few part-time jobs. Just because I'm not on here posting frequent updates doesn't mean Marooned isn't getting any. It just means I'm busy working on it :P



When will Marooned be released?

A difficult question, I know many of you who have been following this project for a long time know I've not exactly the best with my estimations so far :). I won't go so far as to put a date on it however this year is almost certainly the year.

Co-op and Multiplayer Information

A lot of people have been messaging me lately to ask if Marooned will have co-op at launch or if its something that will be added in a later update. So il clear this up here that everyone can see.

Marooned WILL have co-op supported at launch.

I can safely promise this because it is already; implemented, working and tested. Co-op lobbies will work as you might expect, you create a co-op lobby from the main menu and you invite can invite up to 3 friends through steam for a 4 player game.

Dedicated Servers


Further down the development roadmap 64 player dedicated servers will be supported.

The reasoning behined the delay for the dedicated server's inclusion is because there will be an additional tournament style gamemode for players to pit their survival skills against one another. I will elaborate more on the specifics as we get closer to the time. This is not to say that this wont be featured at launch just that it is unlikely to be finished in time. I want you all to know the focus is still on the singleplayer/cooperative experience and this additional competitive mode will in no way detract from the core experience.

Marooned: Arcanus Island is a hardcore, survival, exploration game in which the player - or players (cooperative) - attempt to survive and eventually escape a lush tropical island. You must build a shelter to protect yourself from both the elements and the dangers that the island presents as well as tangle with everything from the wildlife to the islands natives. With beatiful graphics rendered using Crytek's CRYENGINE, you will find yourself immersed in this intense sandbox survival experience.

Engross yourself within the single-player story: as the last survivor of a boat lost in a storm, you find yourself washed up on the shore of an island untouched by modern society. With a lush and beautifully detailed tropical island and fleshed out underwater corals, you will find yourself experimenting on how to survive the multiple threats each environment throws at you.

If surviving alone is too much of a strain on your mental state, become the victim of a plane crash in an alternative cooperative story - struck down by the same storm - with up to 4 players with a different outcome to the single-player finale.

  • 16km^2 of open-world tropical island to explore including: sandy beaches, dense jungles, gloomy caves, a network of rivers and more. ( No loading screens! )
  • Dynamic weather and day/night cycle affecting the wildlife, temperature and environment.

  • Cooperative Multiplayer for up to 4 players.

  • Procedurally breakable environment, realistically destroy trees and collect resources relative to the size of the trunk you cut down.

  • Wide variety of both underwater and surface wildlife
  • Explore temples, shrines and ruins from long lost civilizations, solve many challenging puzzles within and loot useful rewards, though the risk is high.
  • Naturally occurring wildlife phenomenon such as adult turtles nesting and their young hatching, you can stand idly by as they run for the shore while birds swoop in or you can use the situation to your advantage by catching them with your bare hands or placing traps in advance.
  • Tribal island natives, how you react to them affects how they react to you. Observe their traditions and beliefs from afar before attempting to interact, unless they find you first!

WORK IN PROGRESS:

Marooned: Arcanus Island is currently the work-in-progress of a small team and is in its earliest stages of pre-alpha. Everything you see is subject to change and does not reflect the quality of the final product. We will have a video for you very soon and are in the process of converting our game code over to a new build so that we can legally show it to you. We are hoping you will support us in bringing the harsh and realistic survival game that everyone has been waiting for.
