Development Update #3
Pre-order on Humble now!

As I mentioned in the last update, Thief Town will be launching on Humble over the next couple weeks. The pre-order widget has recently been put up on our site![glassknuckle.com] If you'd rather wait, the estimated release date is about two weeks from now, so it shouldn't be long.

New Mechanics

One thing I noticed while play testing the game recently was that, once two players have seen each other, the resulting duel between them is a little clunky. So, I've added knife clashing to the game. When two players stab each other, they now both get pushed back, forcing players to get a bit more creative for kills. It's a small touch, but it adds a lot in these situations.

When not pressing keys, players can now also pretend to be dead. This means you can now pose as corpses on the ground. It isn't a foolproof strategy, however- there is no blood around players lying down. Can you spot the stealthy thief here?

Polishing

There are a lot of other changes to the game, but it doesn't really make sense to talk about it all. Lots of small graphical tweaks and effects to make the game as polished as possible for the 1.0 release. For instance, I spent some time putting this broken projector effect on the splash and title screens:

Last update before release

With release coming up very soon, I don't have enough time to keep writing these, so this will be the last update before then. If you'd like to get in touch feel free to contact me via Twitter. We also have a special Glass Knuckle email list[glassknuckle.us8.list-manage.com] (we don't spam, I promise!) that you can subscribe to for launch updates and et cetera! Also here's our Facebook page. We will certainly send out an email and post with the exact release date once we know it.

Thief Town has also been accepted into the Boston Festival of Indie Games next month, so if you're from the area, Make sure you stop by!

Development Update #2
Humble Store Launch

The kind folks who run the Humble Bundle[www.humblebundle.com] have reached out to me about putting the game up on their store. Since it will be a while before the Greenlight goes through, it looks like this will be the game's launch platform, probably sometime towards the end of August. We may set up pre-orders for the game sometime before then, so stay tuned!

Scores Screen Redesign

The new scores screen is now in place in the game, and it looks fantastic! The game also now supports player names, as you can see on the wanted posters. But, in true party game spirit, you are limited to typing in your name with the game's controls (Up, Down, Left, Right, Stab, Item = U, D, L, R, S, I)

Full Controller Support & Custom Bindings

Thief Town previously has only supported Xbox controllers, and there was a good reason for that: Writing controller bindings across multiple platforms is actually a huge pain. Depending on the controller you are using, all of the key and axis codes can vary drastically depending on if you are using a Windows, Mac, or Linux computer. It wasn't worth it to test every common controller on every operating system just to set up bindings for it. Recently I got the idea to just prompt players to set their own buttons. There are only 6 buttons in the game, so it isn't a hassle to set them in order, and this way players can use any common controller or gamepad in whatever way they wish. So, Thief Town now supports all controller buttons and axes on all common controllers.

The desktop versions of the game are very close to completion. Next up, I will be adding in a few minor mechanics and tweaking the LAN latency handling. I'll post another update in a couple weeks.

Thanks for the support! Also please give Thief Town your Greenlight vote if you haven't yet!

-Brett

Description
Release date: Q3 2014
Thief Town is a multiplayer-only stealth action game set in a pixel-perfect rendition of the Wild West. Lurk in the crowd, emulate non-player characters, and achieve backstabbing victory.

Up to 4 players control identical avatars (the “Thieves”) in a single-screen arena (the “Town”), which is filled with other identical NPCs. Players must identify which NPCs are secretly other players and stab them for points, before being discovered and stabbed themselves!

Features:
  • Competitive 2-4 player battles – Blend in with thieves while you search for and stab your opponents
  • Multiple modes and items – Guns, smoke bombs, drunks, sheriffs, sandstorms, and killer tumbleweeds
  • LAN & Local dynamic play – Play on multiple devices over the same Wi-Fi network, or share the same computer with everyone
  • Cross-platform compatibility – Play across any PC, Mac, Linux, iOS, or Android device
  • Use contollers or the keyboard - 2-player keyboard support, full 4-player controller support
  • No menus – Thief Town automatically connects players on the same network

Game Modes:
  • Thief Town - The classic backstabbing adventure. Players disguise themselves and stab their buddies in the midst of sandstorms and killer tumbleweeds.
  • Spy Town - Players are given items to trick and trap enemy thieves. Smoke bombs, motion detectors, and teleportation devices... Be careful, they’re one-use only!
  • Drunk Town - One randomly selected player (the "Sheriff") must identify and shoot the other knifeless thieves before running out of bullets.

That’s not all! Thief Town is also coming to iOS and Android devices, with full cross-compatibility! Connect a gaming PC, iPad, Macbook, and smartphone together to battle for platform supremacy!

Our vision for Thief Town focuses on the fundamentals of "couch multiplayer" – frantic fun in the same room as your friends. That's just the experience we want to offer to you, so we have no plans to release single-player or online game modes.
