About The Game:

The aim of the game is very simple; SURVIVE! Try and survive for as long as you can, the longer you are alive the harder everything gets. New enemies will start spawning, different bosses will spawn, and the older enemies will start getting a little more aggressive. The twist is within the powerups and spacecrafts. There are a bunch of different powerups that can aid you when battling the enemies. Keep playing to figure out what each powerup actually does. You can unlock different spacecrafts (30 to unlock), which all have a different abilities (apart from the default one) that will enhance the powerups in different ways. You also have the ability to slow down time at will. Everything apart from the player is slowed down. This is a very useful ability but you only have a limited amount of time you can use it for so use it sparingly. Earlier versions of the game were very generic, hence the name. However, I do think the game provides some very fun and unique gameplay elements.

About The Developement:

Generic Space Shooter is the first game I ever made. It was created as part of a university project in my second year of university (last year). After completing my second year, I decided to spend the summer getting the game to work on XBOX 360 as it was already made using C# and XNA. I managed to get it out on XBOX 360 in October 2013. The XBLIG version did much better than I had anticipated. I didn't even think I would get 100 downloads but I actually managed to get ~3000 downloads! I know many people wouldn't call that a success but to me it was. So I really wanted to get the game working on other platforms such as Windows Phone, Android and iOS and also release it for PC. But as the game was created in XNA the Android and iOS versions was proving to be quite a difficult task.

In my final year of university I decided to re-create my game from scratch using the Unity3D game engine. This is a 3D game engine but they recently released an update with tools to better aid with 2D game development. The game you see in the video above is the result of the completed Unity version.

Creating this version was an amazing step as it allowed for the game to be improved in many areas. For example the Unity version has subtle lighting effects, much better explosions, real physics, physics based collision response, more enemies, more bosses and the list goes on. My favorite thing about the unity version is the fact that I can now build versions for Android, iOS, Windows Store, Windows Phone all without having to go through too much trouble. I already have a working Android version with touch controls. The other thing Unity allows is that I can release the game for PC not only for Windows, but Linux and Mac also.
