A guide to selecting any the 9 hidden characters in Samurai Gunn.

They don't affect gameplay, but a few fire arrows, instead of bullets, which may be harder to see and deflect on certain backgrounds.
There are 9 hidden characters in Samurai Gunn. To select one, a specific sequence of directions must be entered during the "Choose Faction" screen. Note that the changes are only cosmetic, and do not appear to affect gameplay. Each section of this guide refers to a faction, so if, for example, two people select Towerfall characters and two select characters from the Vlambeer group, a 2v2 team match will be created.*

  • There should be a brief break between your last input and starting a sequence
  • The sequence should be entered quickly without a break in the middle
  • Once a hidden character has been selected, up and down will have not change the selection but left and right will return you to the normal factions/characters
  • Although up and down have no visible effect, a sequence beginning with up or down can be started without switching to a normal character.

Q: How did I find these sequences?
A: After being shown how to unlock some of the Towerfall characters, I created a script to check every single 8-part input sequence, and watch the colour of one of the pixels in the faction name banner to see if it changes to something besides the default factions. This is what it found (plus a few false positives that it insisted produced new colours, but I could not reproduce).

Q: Does that mean there could be other, still unknown characters?
A: Sort of! The game files include two alternate colours each for the nameless enemy (only the eye colours change), Nidhogg, and Sawbones. However, I only found one of each with my script (update: two for Nidhogg*), so I don't know how to unlock the other colourations. It's possible there are 9-part sequences but my script about 40 hours to finish once I slowed it down enough to make sure it wouldn't skip past anything. Adding another step to every sequence would quadruple that time, so I'm not in a hurry to test that theory.

This is the enemy from Survival mode. Yes, you can select it in Survival, making things a bit confusing.

These characters come from another local-multiplayer arena fighting game, Towerfall[]. Unlike the other characters, they have a unique bullet graphic, an arrow, which will stick to a wall once fired.

There are two characters from Vlambeer games. The first is the main character from the free arcade collect-em-up Super Crate Box[]. Yung Venuz is one of the selectable characters from upcoming roguelike Nuclear Throne[].

I've included the third character, Penny, here because in team matches it's grouped with Super Crate Box and Yung Venuz into a team. Despite the fact that each will look like a different team on the character select screen, with "Team Super Crate Box", "Team Yung Venuz", and "Team Penny", they will act as a team, scoring together and avoiding friendly fire.

I don't know who Penny is, so this may be another Vlambeer character I don't recognize, or may have just been grouped for convenience, as all teams have three possible characters (or colour variations).

The character from dueling game Nidhogg[]. It requires 7 inputs, rather than the usual 8. When selected, the character will be either orange or yellow, apparently at random.

I don't know who this characters is either! If you know, feel free to tell me. Like Nidhogg, it uses 7 inputs instead of the usual 8.

Thanks for this! Could you run your script again? The last update listed "Secrets" so I'm guessing there were more of these added?

I've been playing as the shinobi in survivial recently. Based on some of my experiences on certain stages, it may be worth noting that the enemies' AI may be bugged; resulting in them doing nothing else other than jumping and slashing their way towards the left side of the stage. Overall, it makes it so easy that I don't even bother with it. However, this is just my experience when playing as the shinobi.

I've noticed is that the Towerfall characters' arrows don't destroy bamboo like bullets.

No 0Space chars?
0Space was a versus game Tekno made before Samurai Gunn, so I thought there would at least be a 0Space reference.
