How to play explodimals
  • A/D - move left/right
  • Space - jump
  • Mouse - aim (the mouse will control a reticule which determines the direction your explodimal shoots in)
  • mouse buttons - shoot bombs (1 bomb type set to each button)

  • left stick - move
  • A - jump
  • right stick - aim
  • triggers - shoot bombs (1 bomb type set to each trigger)

What's the point?

Each level in explodimals contains several cakes. The level is complete when all the cakes have been collected.

Some cakes are in hard to reach areas. To get these you may need to use a bomb to blast your explodimal in the right direction.

Some cakes are hidden underground or behind walls. To get these you may need to use a bomb to blast a hole.

Some cakes are hidden under a pile of animals. To get these you may need to use a bomb to blast the animals out of the way.

Each level has a target time and target number of bombs. Collect all cakes within the time limit, while using fewer than the target number of bombs, and you will be awarded a gold star. Gold stars unlock hats and other bonuses.

Where's the challenge?

Primarily, explodimals is a puzzle game. The challenge comes from using your brain to work out how you're going to collect the cakes.

On top of the mental challenge, the game requires the same sort of coordination and timing skills as any good platformer, and there's plenty of skill involved in aiming your bombs so they explode in just the right spot.

On your quest for cake you will encounter many other explodimals. Some just roll around inanely, others will shoot their own bombs at you to knock you off course.

One thing to note is that you cannot 'die' in explodimals. You might screw up by destroying a platform you need to jump from or by falling into a pit, at which point you may need to restart a level, but death is not a concern in the care-free, utopian world of the explodimals!

Release date: Second quarter 2014
Explodimals is a fast-paced 2D physics-puzzle-platformer, where you play as a bouncy, rolling animal head that shoots bombs out of its mouth and loves cake. Why? I have no idea. Roll a giant chicken down a mountain, blast screaming pandas out of a circus cannon, bounce along a beautifully soft carpet of monkeys: explodimals doesn't really make sense, but it's exciting, it's funny, and it'll make you say 'WTF?!'

It's a bit like what would happen if the destructive, animal-abusing fun of Angry Birds had a grotesque mutant baby with the speedy platforming action of Super Meat Boy.

  • Frenetic, physics-based gameplay
  • Create your own abomination of an explodimal creature, choosing from over 180 animal bits
  • Roll, bounce and explode your way through 100 destructible levels, collecting all the cakes
  • Unique explosion mechanics: send yourself flying with a well placed bomb, blast holes in the level to open up new pathways, or just torment the local wildlife by blowing it up
  • Beat the target time in every level to unlock stylish hats for your explodimal to wear!

Explodimals was released on Xbox 360 in October 2013, and now work has begun on the PC version. The biggest changes compared to the console version will be redesigned controls for keyboard and mouse (there will also be gamepad support) and a level editor, allowing players to share their crazy, cake filled creations with their friends (or enemies).

A Kickstarter campaign is underway to fund development of versions of explodimals for multiple platforms (including iOS and Android) for release in November 2014, but regardless of whether the funding goal is reached, a PC version of the game will be released in the first half of the year.

If you'd like to experience explodimals for yourself before making a decision, there's a free demo available on Xbox 360:

Wow. That was really disturbing. The kind of videogame you expect to see being played by a couple of kids from a Rob Zombie´s video.
