A new action platform RPG for the PC, inspired by all the people the heroes always ended up screwing over. Stupid heroes...

You Are Not The Hero is a 2D Action Platform RPG that ditches the battle system to focus on richer RPG gameplay elements. Instead of playing a traditional hero that saves the world, you're playing a bystander swept into the affairs of heroes and villains alike.

"When was the last time you played a game, any game really, where you walked into someones home, nonchalantly opened drawers, cabinets, picked locks, upturned a bed and talked to the freaking homeowner in the hopes of finding something you could loot? Oh, right before this game? Yeah I thought so. Aside from the more humble games like Skyrim, where you had to steal their items instead of taking them, every game that has any sort of item management lets you play the bad guy without being the bad guy.

Let me tell you something: NPCs hate your guts, they just can't say it to your face! Just cleared a forest of roving bandits? Well they were the only ones keeping a population of foxes hyenas meerkats in check. The local farms can't keep them at bay and you've just triggered the worst national food shortage in the past decade, good job, HERO! I think it's time for some payback."

You play as Petula, an unemployed, emotionally charged, ill-tempered, otherwise average young woman. With the royal army hot on their heels, the heroes have made their way to your village where they begin scavenging for supplies in everyone's homes. After you confront them for stealing your pendant, they rush off to continue their quest, giving you a quest of your own to retrieve it.

Traditional RPGs are usually well remembered for their unique battle systems, level grinding and vibrantly epic story. Naturally, being a bystander to said story doesn't lend itself to these conventions. On the other hand, freeing ourselves from these crutches allows us to focus on unique experiences that keep the gameplay fresh and fun.
  • Pixel based movement, no more tile-restrictive movement!
  • Deal with enemies using your brain; Distract them, run away, hide, render them unconscious or use your environment to your advantage. Sure, you can try fighting them with your trusty shovel. Good luck with that!
  • Explore a beautifully crafted world full of hidden secrets and cynical people. Visit impoverished towns, deep caverns, lush forests and mysterious ruins. Jump, climb, platform your way through hazardous environments. Obligatory awesome train sequence included!
  • Tackle unique, fast-paced gameplay that'll keep you on your toes! Save villagers from annihilation, evade a landslide, vanquish a giant freaking ghost (without 'fighting'!)
  • Traverse intricate mazes while solving IQ-zapping puzzles. Form bridges to continue your journey or collapse them to save a village from a foreign army. Switches, Levers and Pulleys oh my! You like those, right?
  • Change the outcome of the game with the decisions you make throughout your journey. You may not be the hero, but you can still make a big, big impact. What kind of impact is completely up to you.
  • Experience the lives of other NPCs by getting part time jobs, or through a side story of their own! Find out how it's like to run an INN, sell items to heroes and raise cute chicken-ostriches!
  • Establish yourself as a shopkeeper! Rent a shop and find suppliers to keep your stock full. Sell your wares and open branches in other cities!
  • Buy a new home! Upgrade when you've got more money, furnish your house with rare items!
  • Enter "The Library" Where you can replay finished storyline chapters, review high scores, view unlocked hidden scenes and access more hidden content!

Hello everyone!

We'd like to thank you for your continued interest in You Are Not The Hero. For those of you who are unaware, we do have forums on our website []. While we had hoped for releasing in 2014, we realize this goal may not be possible. As such, we had made a post back in July stating that we might be able to release at the end of 2014, but that it was more likely to end up in early 2015. You can review the rest of the article here [].

Rest assured for those of you who are not native English speakers, we are looking for solutions to have YANTH translated into other languages. We also want to support the use of controllers to control the game, as well as mouse support, which are not very well supported in the engine.

Again, we appreciate everyone's interest and support for the game, and look forward to having the game released on Steam and seeing how you all enjoy the game
