Purge's guide to Support Witch Doctor
By pudge
Witch Doctor is a great Support hero that has useful disable that can, with the right circumstances, result in a very long duration stun. He also has good utility in his heal, and good damage potential with Maledict and his Death Ward. You have to play him quite carefully though, as his armor and hp gain are quite low, so make sure to use your heal often in the early game to stay alive.

For mid to late game, aim to be in teamfights to throw cask, use your heal and do as much damage as possible with ult!

Why don't you add Bloodstone? That pretty much allows for an almost permanent heal.

It should be noted that you have to be VERY careful how and when you use Ghost Scepter. Vs. right-clickers, absolutely, but beware if the enemy has nukes, because the scepter causes you to take 40% extra magic damage.

For a long time I usually didn't get heal until later, the reasoning being I focused on hard ganking and max damage and would max Maledict after casks and have always been very successful with that. Dropping Mal on tower diving enemies is devastating and usually nets you a kill. The heal is just very mana intensive. I do submit that it's an EXTREMELY good heal and coupled with the use of a clarity ro Soul Ring, it's a VERY effective and cost effective way to heal up your entire team after a gank or team fight. I suggest leveling Maledict or Heal depending on your playstyle and game situation. If you are hard supporting a carry, definately get the heal up. If you are ganking, Maledict is often the most effective way to go.

Check my guild out, its called "Solo Ganker" for witch doctor, it focuses on high damage items like skull basher and desolator. Sounds dodgy but it works :d2naturesprophet:

This guide has helped me learn how to play WD much better, thanks Purge! From my own expierence, I prefer Urn of Shadows over Drums of Endurance since a few carries get them anyway and the offensive use of urn can work well with Maledict. I like getting 1 level of Maledict at 4 over stats too, mainly because I like to have the Maledict + Death Ward combo at level 6, but I entirely agree that getting Voodoo Restoration at level 2 is SO useful, and it depresses me that a lot of WD's wait until level 10 to get any levels of it. Great guide, I look forward to more in the future!

Is bkb a recommended item for WD?
Also, should Maledict be put off for that long? It could be effective in a lane jump assault.
Thanks for putting in the time for this guide, Purge!
