Tiny- Carry Safe Lane:Logical Choices
By Kurnza
This Guide is intended for those players who are looking to try out new heroes to play, hopefully this will help you along the path of learning. The guide explains some of the logic behind item choices and how some items are more useful than others, in certain situations. This guide only shows my own personal opinions and I'm happy to hear your own opinion and constructive criticism.
NOTE: this guide is not meant for a mid lane tiny as mid lane tiny has a very different item build

Item Build

Starting Items
Stout Shield You can trade this for either more consumables, wand(trilane) or more branches but personally I think stout shield is essential due to tiny's 0 starting armor, makes tanking creeps a lot more bearable.

I think the rest of the items are pretty much obvious choices, branches for the extra stats and consumables to stay in lane for longer.

Early Game
  • Clarity Dont be afraid to ferry some mana pots for the early game kills in pubs. if your supports are bad or have no stuns always useful to have mana to avalanche
  • Magic Wand Who doesnt need it?
  • Bracer a start to your drums and adds a good boost to your hp pool
  • Boots What every hero needs

Core Items
  • Phase Boots I like phase boots the best mainly because of the boost in mobility that it gives you and it allows you to position yourself for ava+toss combo, but it can be traded for treads which is also a good option (atk speed + Stat Switch)
  • Drums The move speed aura + phase boots makes for very nice moblity to position your self for those ava+toss combos. atk speed aura and the extra stats is a very nice addition to tiny for early game. you should look to sell this in the later stages and make your support buy it
  • Aghanim Scepter stats, cleave damge, hp,mp, increase atk range and extra damge to building. IMO most aghs upgrade are useless and other items give more to the hero but some of them can be great and Tiny's aghs upgrade is probably the best. this item is essential to playing an effective carry tiny
  • Black King Bar Pretty obvious why you need BKB. This item is important since it blocks out most spells and disable therfore allowing you to deal excessive damage in teamfights. although it should be noted that if disables and spells are not hindering your team fight ability this item may be skipped
  • Yasha Aghs is nice but after Grow! is maxed your atk speed has gone to ♥♥♥♥. Getting a yasha is nice addition due to the extra agi (gives extra armor dont forget) and the bonus move+atk speed. can be upgrade to manta depending on how the game is progessing

Situational Items
  • Hand Of Midas If you are planning to afk farm for the first 35min of the game, Midas is the way to go. not to mention the extra atk speed on tiny is very nice
  • Assault Cuirass A great item that gives a lot to the team and yourself, only problem is, the fact that it is so damn expensive therfore get this item either when you are very very rich or when you cant out dps the other carry. although it should be noted that if they are melee, craggy exterior should help a lot
  • Mask Of Madness Grow! can sometimes hinder that fast dps damage that you want, but get this item if you want some quick and cheap attack speed. although I advise that you only get this after aghs. if just want the lifesteal I suggest you tell your support to get a vlads for you to save an item slot
  • Manta Style A solid item for that extra push power when you need it. can also help in team fight and counter active items such us Orchids (and maybe heavens halberd)
  • Shadow Blade I put this item cause this is a pub guide, but IMO this item is horrible beause its easily countered and its expensive. It can be used for running or using it for back stab into ava+toss combo which deals a lot of damage. decent players will buy dust/wards
  • Hyperstone Hyperstone is good for atk speed but yasha is alot better IMO. Hyperstoen does not give you moblity or armor and it is also more expensive and harder to build. Can also be replaced with a Mask of Madness. Only get this item if you are going for cuirass
  • Heart Of Tarrasque generally a good item to tank up. gives nice regen and hp although I prefer cuirass over this item due to the fact that cuirass still gives you enough armor to tank and gives a lot more to the team

Luxury Items
  • Boots Of Travel very late game when you dont want to use an item slot for a tp scroll
  • Daedalus It'll butt rape the enemy team with aghs nuff said
  • Divine Rapier Get this item ASAP. once purchased take your left hand off the keyboard and scratch your balls while right clicking with right hand
  • Etheral Blade e-blade, ava+ toss --> laugh
Skill Build

This skill build order is just the one that I prefer to use in most games. It can be changed according to the game's situation and flow. For example sometimes at the early levels you dont want to lose the attack speed due to grow. So instead of taking Grow! at lvl 6 you can max toss and avalanche for more burst and take grow at 9 and 11 when you have items to compensate for the loss in attack speed.

When you dont want to take grow at level 6

Avalanche
  • Stuns (1 second)
  • AOE (275)
  • Combine with toss to do extra damage
Avalanche is mainly used to lock down an enemy for a short period of time allowing tiny to get close to enemy heroes and toss them in the air.
Toss
Get creative with your tosses, just don't troll your friends too much :D
(sorry about bad quality video)
  • AOE (275)
  • Range (1300)
  • Combine with avalanche to do extra damage
Get creative with this ability, there are many things that you are able to do with it besides doing an avalanche toss combo. Toss your team mates for them to get close to enemy heroes, or toss an enemy to 5 of your teammates. (Just toss an ES into the middle of the enemy for ownage).

Craggy Exterior
  • Stun (1.2 seconds)
  • Armor Increase(2, 3 ,4, 5)
  • Chance (6,12,18,24)
A great survivability passive that allows tiny to survive hard and fast dps heroes. the extra armor is also nice considering his low armor.
Grow!
  • Increase Damage (50,100,150)
  • Atk speed loss (20,25,50)
  • Move speed (20,40,60)
  • Toss does extra damage with each level
  • Upgradable
Tiny's passive ultimate. a great ultimate that gives Tiny a lot of extra damage for late game dps and easy early last hits. Made even better when you purchase aghanims scepter.
Gameplay
Levels 1-9
  • From the start of the game you would want to try get as much last hits as possible and getting your early game items up as they will help you survive. similar to every other carry hero try to control your creep equilibrium so that its close to your tower (but not in range), and stout should help you with this. If your lane partner has some kind of stun/disable you may be able to go for kill at level 3 with ava+toss (given that you bought 3 branches and you should have enough mana for one combo). If not save your combo until they try to dive you (hope for tp supports) or wait til your solo mid comes and ganks for you. Once again it is vital that you get some good early farm. Also remember to ferry some clarity for mana.
Levels 9-16

  • Hopefully you got some of those core items such as phase boots and drums. in this stage you are quite strong in a 1v1 situation and should manage against most heroes and your team fight potential is decent but I recommend that you continue farming til you get Aghanims before you go as 5 with your team. an alternative is to go around ganking and picking off the enemy team. ganking around the map may give you more GPM depending on how successful you are. Once Aghanims is up pushing towers becomes a lot easier and your team fight potential is almost at its best.

Levels 16-25
  • You should be quite strong by now, all your core items should be up and you should be able to kill supports and squishy carries in a short time. Assess the situation of the game and try pick the situational items that is best for the current game.

Best Partners / Worst Enemies
Best Partners
  • Earthshaker
Toss into echo slam is no joke, not only does toss have a massive range and decent chunk of damage, the follow fissure and avalanche will hurt, not to mention the cleave if you have aghs

  • Wisp
Just a good support for any hero, but especially good for tiny cause he can use each of wisp's ability to its maximum potential. tether great mobility to position yourself in team fight and an extra stun, Spirit balls good extra damage and range for those blinkers, Overcharge any atk speed is good on tiny and Relocate allows to gank for a quick pick off and then teleports you straight back into lane for you to farm further

  • Tidehunter
Same concept as Earthshaker, toss into ravage. it saves Tidehunter having to buy blink/force

  • Centaur
Toss into stomp and the follow up with double edge and avalanche gives good early killing potential for this combo

Worst Enemies

  • Drow
Not only does this ♥♥♥♥♥ do tons of damage, she has a silence so you cant stun her and she also has frost arrows so she is definitely gonna kite you like crazy. also cause shes range craggy exterior doesnt help.
  • Veno
The gale + poison sting hurts tiny a lot. cause of the 0 armor that tiny has in the early game he can harass you really easily. Game becomes easy once you buy BKB.
  • Phantom Lancer
Making images everywhere so you dont who to toss or avalanche and mana burns you with diff blade and then purges you. although the good thing is that you can kill a lot of his images with toss and avalanche
  • Medusa
Her snake is annoying to everyone, but its really annoying laning against a medusa as a tiny because of tiny's extremely low mana pool and her ulti stops you from getting anywhere close to her.
  • Axe
Having 0 armor means your are going to have trouble when he cuts creeps, I would just ask for some ranged support to harrass/kill him.

Luxury items are for trolling minus BoT

If you're curious, try a Tiny vs Tiny with bots using your 5 core items, and AC vs rapier for the 6th slot. I'm willing to bet AC Tiny beats rapier Tiny with half HP left.

Other than that, congrats for the guide, I really like this approach to Tiny :)

Sorry for double post, character limit.

Well I gather you're a fan of logic, so you shouldn't fall into a trap like this :). Doing a finger of death per hit sounds good, sure. But, to put it simply, in a 1v1 at level 25, a Tiny with aghs, phase boots and rapier will barely beat a Tiny with aghs, treads and hyperstone (and I do mean barely).

The logic behind this is quite simple. Dps is calculated by multiplying damage times attack speed. Suppose you have 10 points to spend on either dmg or atk spd. The best choice is getting 5 dmg and 5 atk spd, as it gives 5x5=25 dps. Choosing 9 dmg and 1 atk spd (this is what Tiny with rapier looks like) gives you 9x1=9 dps, which is awful compared to the potential 25 dps.

Bottom line: the bigger the imbalance between damage and attack speed, the lower your dps will be. Tiny already has a serious imbalance, due to his ultimate, therefore rapier is probably the worst way to spend 6200 gold. So, even if it didn't drop on death, I'd rather list it under "No-no" than under "Luxury". :)

Thanks to Askod and Hiero Who informed me that maxing toss before avalanche gives a better damage output.

@Bloostorm you cant throw game by buying hyperstone... you are doing like 600 damage per hit with rapier. its basically a lvl 1 finger of death per hit. Also why cant you have both Daedalus and Rapier, but you have a fair point. Luxury items are for trolling anyways, when your team cant lose

really nice build

yea i get that idea now about blink dagger.
tried ur build last time and works super great and fun but ppl seems dislike me for chosen tiny as team carry, because I took farm XD
bloo Mar 3, 2013 @ 5:08am
I like your idea, keep it up.
Only one mention: Rapier is a very bad choice as a damage item here. When trying to maximize your dps, you should always look to balance damage and attack speed. Tiny has huge base damage and terrible attack speed. In terms of pure dps, he would probably benefit almost as much from just a Hyperstone that costs 2100.
Also, even if you choose to go for damage, from level 16 on Daedalus gives him more effective damage than Rapier. At level 25, the difference is even bigger. So no point in even mentioning it's cheaper and doesn't drop :)

Blink Dagger is for mid Tiny IMO. it gives you the ability to initiate team fight and do effective ganks. However with a carry tiny blink dagger does not give you any form of atk speed or damage so its not very effective compare to other items such as yasha or drums. so I dont recommend it on a carry tiny which aims for DPS
