What You need to Have Installed
What you need to have installed

Part 1: Desktop Prep
On Your Desktop, Right-Click, then go down to 'New' and from the window that pops out click 'New Folder'

Name this new folder the game you are working on the name of the game with No Comma, No spaces, no capitals (for example, if you are going to do Portal 2, name the folder portal2, or like if your working with Counter Strike Global Offensive, name the folder csgo, and press enter

Like this :

IMPORTANT!
NOW THIS IS GOING TO GO TWO DIFFRENT WAYS,

SO SKIP TO THE NEXT LIST IF THE GAME YOU ARE COPYING ISN'T ON THE LIST SKIP DOWN TO THE PART STATRTING WITH COMMON FOLDER GAMES TO FIND THE GAME YOU ARE LOOKING FOR.

STEAMAPPS FOLDER GAMES:
SKIP DOWN TO 'COMMON FOLDER GAMES' BELOW IF YOU GAME ISNT ON THIS LIST

IF YOU ARE USING
  • Half-Life Source

  • Half-Life Deathmatch Source ( You also need to copy the Hl1 and Hl1mp folders from the Half-life Deathmatch Source folder under your steam name folder and put all the other folders in these two folders in the folder you created for this game on the Desktop)

Then,

Navigate to ( Unless you use a Diffrent Lettered Drive for you Windows OS) Then:

  • 32-Bit - C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps
  • 64-Bit - C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps

and look for the game you want, like for Portal 1, look for 'Portal Content' and double click on it to open it in GCFScape

COMMON FOLDER GAMES:
  • Half-Life 2*1
  • Half-Life 2: Epsoide 1*1
  • Half-Life 2: Epsoide 2*1
  • Half-Life 2 Deathmatch ( If you are doing the last three, unless you don't have them, then why do this one? unless you want the maps? lol)
  • Portal
  • Portal 2
  • Counter-Strike Source
  • Counter Strike: Global Offensive
  • Day of Defeat Source
  • Team Fortress 2 ( Source Filmmaker downloads TF2 stuff with it, but the TF2 that SFM comes with is a completely old version from what i read, import the current TF2 files if you want newer stuff, like MvM models)
  • Left 4 Dead
  • Left 4 Dead 2
  • Dota 2

-*1 = Half-Life 2 and the epsoide models, and i think some music and sounds have been uploaded to the Source Filmmaker Workshop by Valve Themselves under the name 'Valve Artists, located at: http://steamcommunity.com/id/valve_artists/myworkshopfiles/?appid=1840
Use my methoid only if you are going for the game's maps

THEN

Navigate to

  • 32-Bit - C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common
  • 64-Bit - C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common

Using Portal 2 as an example, now open Portal 2\portal2 and scroll down to the pak01_dir.vpk and double click it to open it in GCFScape ( all other Source Games in the Common folder will have a pack01_dir.vpk in their (source Game Name\gamename)

The Games that were recently updated to SteamPipe, using Counter Strike: Source as an example go into Common/Cstrike/cstrike_pak_dir.vpk

ALSO, MAP FILES FOR ALL STEAMPIPE GAMES ARE IN THE MAPS FOLDER (NOT IN THE VPKS, BUT IN THE FOLDER LIKE Portal/portal/maps, COPY THEM FROM HERE AND PASTE THEM IN THE FOLDRS YOU WILL BE PUTTING INTO THE SOURCEFILMAKER FOLDER LATER IN THE GUIDE!
Part 2 - GCFScape
Now we are in GCFScape, see the file on the right box?

Right Click and then left click 'Extract'

Remember the folder on the desktop we made for our game? ( in my case, portal2)

well in the window asking where to extract the selected folders to click the new folder you created on the desktop earlier and then click ok.

7. Now GCFScape will copy the games files to the new folder we created on the desktop, give it time to complete

Part 3 - Finishing up
Close the folder, now on the Desktop, Right Click the folder and left click 'Cut'

Now Navigate to

  • 32-Bit - C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\sourcefilmmaker\game
  • 64-Bit - C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\sourcefilmmaker\game

and press CTRL+V to paste the folder in here.

Now while in the folder we are currently in, go into the usermod folder and locate gameinfo.txt and double click to open it.

Now in the gameinfo.txt in Notepad ( what i use) scroll down till you find a part that looks like this:

Game |gameinfo_path|.
Game tf_movies
Game tf
Game left4dead2_movies
Game hl2

Right under : Game hl2
Put the name of the folder we moved to the game folder of the sourceflimmaker EXACTLY like the games above it are placed ( so you type Game ( then press the TAB key here 4 times then type the game you moved's name so it lines up with the hl2 line and the ones above it)

For an example with Portal

you would put:

Game portal

or for Portal 2

Game portal2

now go to File > Save then exit note pad

We're Done! you should be able to use the game you desire in the Source Filmmaker. Have fun

i would go TF2 for that, but most recent TF2 content is already preloaded into SFM

Awesome guide. Just one thing: with the Team Fortress one, do I rename it 'tf' or 'tf2'? Because I'm worried that if I override the 'tf' folder and they don't work anymore, I don't want to reinstall SFM.

Hi! Sorry to bother you again, but the props aren't showing up? The names are there, but in the preview they don't show up, and they don't show up when placed either. I'm not sure why? Thanks!

DID You put it in the new folder you created for the portal 2 content
Stari [TC] Jun 8 @ 1:02pm
When I try using the Batch Compiler(For Portal 2), it doesn't bring it up. Or if I double click on it, BC comes up empty. I downloaded both the installer and the archive. Help? D:

I don't think this goes for gmod, if anything, i always used to put my addon folders i downloaded on the internet into the addons folder where the files are for garry's mod, pre-gmod 13
Atrip3 May 18 @ 6:07am
I've done all of your instructions for :gmod:, but I don't know where I can select it. Can you help me? (I'm a BIG noob)
