Bit Castle was made for a 4-day game jam in Denmark. Everyone was given the topic: “Suspense” and the challenge to only use two buttons for the entire game. Everything else was a free choice, so we came up with this.

Bit Castle is a 2D side scrolling game that sets out to take you back in time. It features old school platforming, 8x8 pixel sprites and a large pack of nostalgic 8-bit sounds, made and tweaked in an online sound generator made for 8- and 16-bit sounds. The gameplay and overall feel of the game aims to be as in the late 80’s, but with a few modern twists, such as the resolution being higher allowing the sprites to move smoothly even though their pixels seem bigger, and transparency in the HUD (Heads-Up Display).

In the game, the player takes control of an explorer who sets out to find the treasure in the ancient underground castles, that the books and rumors have spoken about. Our explorer travels down there alone, only with a torch and his gun, hoping to hit the gold. Unfortunately, this won’t be easy for him, as the castles are packed with the deadly Slimies that will murder anything that is alive, on sight. These creatures have been living down there since the local chemist had an accident in the lab, which squirted Slimies everywhere. They eventually multiplied and evolved, gaining legs, ability to shoot slime balls from their stomach. This is not all though, our hero also needs to watch out for the many dangerous lava pits that will end his life instantly.
As the player progresses through the levels, he collects golden coins, ammo for his gun and life healing hearts. The golden coins has a spell that is triggered when 15 of them is achieved. They transform into extra health capability allowing the player to gain more life in total.

The goal of each level is to get to the exit, most often located in the down right corner of the level. This exit takes the player further down in the castle, proceeding to the next level.

The two-button mechanic is extremely annoying. I couldn't even jump over the first lava pit.

I like this so far, The two-key only mechanic is interesting and tricky to master, But I agree it seems a bit too hard, At least with the jumping the way it is now.
