Yes "zombies" are played out - That's part of the irony. This is a zombies game thats NOT ABOUT ZOMBIES.

"Zombies." is about something much more terrifying than the Hollywood rendering of the mindless undead. It's about a monster that actually exists in real life - Middle Management.
