Another f2p VN which exceeded expectations! Cupid is a Gothic romance with mature content from Fervent/Afterthought. Although the graphics are limited, it has a strong unusual theme, good music, and straightforward game play. The player takes on the role of a dead mother making choices on what advice to give to her young daughter, (advice which is not always followed). These choices lead to multiple endings. Despite it's title, the main theme of the game is not about dating, relationships or sex, but the darker side of the consuming power of love. The workaround for a bug which may prevent you getting the last of the 67 achievements can be found in the 'Please read this...' section of Adett's 'Cupid 100% Achievement Guide'. Recommended.

It's hard to review Gone Home without including a spoiler. The female protagonist arrives at her empty family home and tries to discover what happened to her sister and parents. This is a point and click walk-through visual novel which is atmospheric, has good voice acting, and pays attention to detail. However, be warned, this is clearly aimed at the 90's US teenage nostalgia market, so there are many objects to pick up and/or examine, but few clues to be gained that way. The plot is linear, there are no puzzles (excluding doors to be unlocked etc), and the game is short enough to be completed in one session. Recommended not because I liked it or think it's value for money, but because it is a well made example of its genre.

Everlasting Summer is much better than I expected. It's a Russian text-based manga-style visual novel (+ hentai patch) with an introverted male protagonist, lots of dialogue, plenty of choices, a small maze, and multiple endings. Much of the plot has a dating-base theme, but there's far more to the story than that. Graphic backgrounds are drawn in a number of styles, the result of many different people having worked on the game prior to its eventual release. The English translation is excellent with hardly any errors, though I saw a couple of lines in the maze of original Russian text which had somehow slipped through. Recommended.

The Life Is Strange Directors Commentary is well worth watching once you've finished the game. The two co-directors talk about their intentions for the game, and some of the decisions they had to make (including those based on feedback from fans), together with walkthroughs of parts they felt were significant. There were also contributions from many others involved in creating the game, including Hannah Telle and Ashly Burch, the voice actors for Max and Chloe.

Life is Strange is an adventure/puzzle visual novel with a sci-fi tinge set in an American high school during October 2013. There are three interwoven story strands: renewing a relationship between the two female protagonists, searching for a missing student, and preventing a local environmental disaster. The powerful emotional narrative presents choices to be made which affect later game play, many of them dealing with questions of loyalty and morality. I found this to be an intelligent well-made game whose strengths far outweigh any minor flaws and glitches. It's hard not to come away enriched by a greater awareness of how our decisions can affect not just what happens to us, but also to others in ways we're not always aware of.
