Like many other reviewers will point out, this game is constantly on sale at a cheap price and it is usually bundled with the sequel and/or the 3rd game. It is absolutely worth the value of the money (usually just a few dollars). For that reason alone it's worth playing if you've played the later games and enjoyed them or want to start from the very beginning like I did.

However, it can be tough to get going with it and it seems many people seem to give up in the first few hours. Partly because it is a slightly older game from a small foreign studio at the time when it was made. While the graphics look good and the audio is solid, the movement/combat and inventories can all be quite clunky and takes some time to get used to. If you can forgive that and get past that aspect you can really start to enjoy it.

Altogether, because of the story it is a great game and you can see how much time they put into making it with all of the different quests and plot lines all intersecting throughout the game and your choices do matter. It's also impressive that it is all to English, and they made a re-release (Enhanced Edition) that seems to be a massive improvement to the original game.

The most frustrating thing is just that it can tend to crash a lot, especially in my experience. I had to spend a couple hours over the two weeks I played it trying to figure out fixes and solutions to keep from getting errors and crashes to desktop. That really isn't fun whatsoever. But it should be a testament to how much I enjoyed the game that I wanted to keep playing it even through those frustrations.

Overall, I give it an 8 out of 10 and I highly recommend starting from this title if you want to get into the series. If you're someone who only likes newer smoothed and polished games then you might start with The Witcher 3 and then possibly work your way back to this. Either way, wherever you start, save some money and buy it in a bundle with the other games.
