Regarding the difficult learning curve:

When I first started playing Sunless Sea, I kept dying and having to repeat the same quests over and over again. At that time the difficulty felt insurmountable, the balancing of supplies with fuel impossible. However, with patience, help from the wiki, and a lot of trial and error I was able to get over the learning curve. That being said, most of the negative reviews have to do with the difficulty and the learning curve, and to that I say: yeah it is an unforgiving game but that's why beginners guides and the manual save option exists (before I got this game on steam I save scummed the heck out of it). There are many resources and varying quests you can take on to jumpstart your game with relative ease.

Regarding the game itself:
I've played this game for years since its beta and have continued to play it on and off after the full release. What I can say is that I can never get bored of this game, everytime I come back in it feels like a fresh breath of air. There's so many paths and attempts I have yet to try and so many stories to explore. Granted one has to first get through the difficult learning curve, but then the world's your oyster (or in the case of the Zee a monstrous clam entity). The writing is extremely well done and the gameplay is enjoyable, though many aspects of it seem redundant and impractical, but these can be avoided with just a little critical thinking and foresight. Overall, Sunless Sea is a pretty darn good game with an awesome team behind it.

Recommendation?
Yes, it's diffcult but it's not insurmountable. However, if you're looking for a straight up casual game with no background then the difficulty will probably turn you away, in that case may I recommend Fallen London, a casual browser game set in the same universe as Sunless Sea. When deciding on whether to buy Sunless Sea, take into account whether you're willing to spend some time learning the game. All in all, Sunless Sea is a really well-written and enjoyable game with the only con being it's difficulty to new comers.
