How I see it, Doom is very similar to the work of Willaim Shakespeare. It was very innovative for it's time, nothing like it was made before that was to any similar quality and it has gotten a virtually universal praise even a long time after it's release, even to those who have never played it. However, since it's inceptions many advances have came along and made it look mediocre or at the very least dated. Just like reading a Shakespeare story today, if you play Doom today, you should go in enjoying it for what it is as not to be disapointed by it's inflated reputation.

I don't know where you are coming from on the lootboxes thing since I never mentioned that and I never said it was boring. What I said was for anyone who tries to play it today with no previous expirience should enjoy it for what it is. Also, it is actually outdated on a technical level but that isn't exactly a bad thing. Think of it this way, everyone my age that I show this game to through videos say "the sound quality is trash" or "the graphics are primitive as fuck" but you can still have fun with outdated graphics and sound .
