GOG lets me have a game library in the cloud, auto updates can be enabled, all the games are in one store...
And if I don't want GOG's UI installed on my computer? Then it doesn't get installed; I simply download the game and play it. Steam doesn't do that, because Steam is DRM. It's mildly more convenient DRM than, say, UPlay, though these days of the big three (UPlay, Steam, Origin) I prefer EA's version. Given the choice though? GOG all the way. Fortunately for the big three they have special deals so I'm forced into other clients.
They're still intrusive and annoying though.
Without it you would have tons of DVD's all of which had to be put in the computer everytime you play. You'd have to search for updates. You'd be fishing around many websites looking for games.
