Yea you start rough and you die(more to monkeys than players) but you get better and learn to survive and that is kind of the point of the entire game.I have only played solo on a medium server for 20 hours,unlocked almost all blueprints by myself,have the best gear you can get early game and i`ve had no problems with toxic or hostile players because you can easily avoid them since the map is so big.If you only have a beatstick and no armor don`t go running around in the desert where all the high level players farm fragments,This should be common sense but seeing the bad reviews for many people this is not.For a Pre-Alpha game compared to the Pre-Alpha of ARK i think the devs should be applauded for how the game runs and the mass of content already in the game.Servers are still wonky but they constantly fix problems they find.
