The vanilla game is pretty meh in terms of gameplay but still has an stellar atmosphere. But with mods this game is still one of my favorites to play!

Some mods that i recommend are:
Call of Pripyat Complete, a mod that wants to enhance the vanilla game with better graphics and more.
MISERY 2.1, a mod for those that felt vanilla on master difficulty was a walk in the park. Overhauls the entire game and almost becomes a new game with the mod installed.

Without mods the game certainly feels somewhat dated but modded (especially with MISERY) the game will still be a blast to play
