This game is great fun for a while. The first world, I guess you could call it, entertained me fully. The next world, however, essentially takes out the strategic thinking and replaces it with praying that the RNG is feeling generous. The game went from being fun to being work, and it really ruins the experience for me. I've lost more heroes trying the first level of the second world than I lost in the entirity of the first, and all of them were because I didn't get the cards that I needed, not by any playstyle fault of mine.

Unless this is changed in a patch, perhaps by making your heroes' starting stats increase as the levels go by, then I don't think I'll be playing much more of this game. I'm actually quite sad about that, because Guild of Dungeoneering has all the potential of a great, long-term gaming experience, save for the difficulty spikes.

As a player who values games on their singleplayer campaigns, I can honestly say that this expansion disappointed me beyond all belief. I went in expecting a campaign based around the standard Age of Empires basics: Building and Expanding. What I got was a mediocre campaign with extremely poor writing and gameplay based on micromanaging a set of units that you couldn't replace. If I had wanted such a campaign, I would have gone to one of the brilliant custom scenarios made by the community, not a $10 waste of cash. The new civilizations are intriguing, but ultimately seem to be the only good thing about this expansion.

When I enter a campaign, I expect to have an on-rails sequence to begin with, followed by increasingly open scenarios that allow me to screw around with my preferred strategies. I NEVER want to see an entire campaign based around having no way to replenish your armies.

This game is incredibly fun to play. If you enjoy grand strategy, look no further. The ruler designer DLC is a necessity if you want to get the most out of this game, however, but that absolutely does not change my opinion. I have spent 576 hours playing this game, and regret nothing.
