Despite my thumbs down, I really did enjoy my time with this game. So, why the non-recommendation?

Because this game is at the point to where now it takes months/years to do anything that has any impact on the living universe. You can have your own little fun doing small missions and mining ore and killing AI, which really is all fun and immersive, but the fact of the matter is that if you come into this game now, you're already too late and the train has left the station a long time ago.

The main reason I don't recommend this game is because of the leveling system. "Skills" aren't necessarily skill-based (though you will need to practice various ship "maneuvers"), but merely time spent on downloading knowledge into your mainbrain (a la Matrix) so that your clone can use different ships or weapons. The higher the skill, the longer the wait, the better the payoff.

I stopped my subscription after realizing that maxing out the ships and guns that I wanted to play would take about 3 years. Granted, the ships, guns, and modules that I wanted to use were more advanced, but as a gamer and as someone who enjoys stacking numbers in my favor, I didn't like the fact that I would have to play sub-par until my abilities were maxed out. Nevermind if I had any skill with a ship or was clever at manipulating the market; because of the lack of maxed skills in my prefered style of play, I wouldnt' do as well.

If I had joined this game five or six years ago, I might feel a little differently, but after investing eight months into the game (two months just to get the slightest idea of what I would have wanted to/could do), I realized that taking so much time to make any kind of impact on the community as a player (not as a person, as I've met some very nice people along the way) wasn't very attractive to me.

All in all, as a game, I loved my time in EVE online. I might have even stayed if there was a cockpit. The complexity of ship loadouts, the vastness of space, the epicness of battles (that I've never participated in), the realistic flow of economy, it all coalesces into a great experience...for someone who was there to board the train early.

I feel ya. Hell, I came to EVE in 2007, played for a long while, then quit for an even longer while.
After I came back, my corp and alliance turned out to be dead for years, all my wealth was inflated into nothingness, so I had to start over from square one.
But you know what? Even in 2007, it seems like it was ALREADY too late. Every system was taken, every moon had a POS, every market was oversaturated.
Just like in real life, right?

So, the way I see it, it's either always too late or never too late. Enough hard work, dedication and autism can take you ways in EVE.

SO, I only have 1 month in eve. Take a look:

http://eve.battleclinic.com/killboard/killmail.php?id=24774265

I was with 4 of my friends, we had very cheap thrasher fit, around 1.5mil~2mil. We took out a RAPIER fitted with around 650mil. So it's like 10mil agains 600mil ISK.

Yeah he made a mistake and aggoed us with some factional turrets around him. BUT, we havn't lost one ship tho.

Most of us doesn't have more than 1~3 month of game.
The game objective is to have fun doing anything you want to, go and lose some ships, don't be afraid to lose some isk!

I have been playing Eve Online for a solid 2.5 years.

I have learned a few things.
1. a 1 day old player can have a big impact in a fleet achieving victory.
2. find a good corp to join that fits you personally and what you would like to do can go along way
3. The game has started making things a lot easier for a new player to get going than in the past.

That all being said. This universe can be ruthless and helpful all at the same time. Anything you can think of doing in the real world, you can do in this game. The only difference is, no jail time.

If interested in this game though. I would recommend buying from the Eve Online website and not steam.

@xterrylorakhx Steam won't show it, but I used to play tons of EVE back in the day, triple boxing 'solo' trader. Ended up heading a small highsec corp that produced drones.

Although it's true that upfront, one might think that the time based skill learning is a plus. Once you really get into the game and have specific goals you want to reach, you'll most likely require specific modules, ships, etc. And all of those will be quite steep time gates. And there is absolutely nothing you can do about it.

And what's not necesarily fun is that if you end up finally getting a skill that took you forever to get, only to realize it doesn't exactly work like you thought. That can be a painful experience.

But like I tell most people. Eve is a cold and ruthless universe.

Not sure what to make of this review. The fact that EVE's skill training setup lets a player play the game instead of focusing on grinding for XP has always been my favorite aspect of it. I hate grinding. I don't know anyone who doesn't. EVE said no to grinding. I love EVE Online. It's that simple :-)

If you like a game that lets you see social darwinism in action and that rewards you for engaging the community rather than the amount of time you spend standing about whacking random rodents to death with a stick in a field for hours on end, then EVE is your game. Hope to see you all out there.
