This game is highly overrated even by users. More casual users are playing AAA games nowadays. It's like the developers wanted to tell a story and inserted gameplay in it. Gameplay comes first in a video game, everything else is secondary - added bonus. It was probably the 'girl factor' that made it receive the high ratings. Scarcity of good story-driven single player games on the PC platform must have also increased the ratings. The fact is this is not a great overall game.
Likes:
- Story. You are playing this game for the story and nothing else.
- Great Visual Arts.
- Liked the navigational aid implementation.
- Controls are fast and responsive. One of the better PC ports.
Dislikes:
- No quick save.
- Just another shooter.
- Enemies run like babies. They trip over a stone almost everytime when running and fall to the ground. This is ridiculous and confusing and irritating at the same moment. Irritating because the enemy gets away from my aimed crosshair. I don't understand why no one else pointed this out.
- Enemies know that you are aiming at him/her and not the guy standing next to him/her from a mile away (and hence the tripping over part). Even Elizabeth knows that you are aiming at her with the gun even with her back turned towards you.
- I guess the RPG enemy isn't human since he doesn't stop to take a breath break. Never mind the fact he's got unlimited RPG ammo and his RPG gun doesn't require a reload (I felt like that).
- All enemies are boring.
- Elizabeth is only there for the story. She has absolutely nothing to do with gameplay. You don't have to protect her, she takes care of herself in combat. Lockpicking, finding resources, opening tears can be done by the player himself in terms of gameplay.
- Really didn't find opportunities to use vigor and environment combos. Maybe it was too simple to shoot down the enemies and Elizabeth almost always gives you ammo.
- I don't like gramaphone music. Just because the story requires the music to be like that doesn't mean that I'm going to like the music. Combat music is unbearable.
- Maps are very linear.
- The atmosphere is totally meant for kids. The fair at the start and in the Slate map, the vending machines models and animations and sound, etc. Felt like the game was meant for kids. Kids will enjoy the skyline. Also I don't like the black and white television era.
- I have been a top class science student. I can imagine what science can achieve in the next 100 years. But the developers trying to explain the fantasy element of this game by using science was way over the top. I wished the developers explained the fantasy element using fantasy and not science. The timeline in the game doesn't fit according to real science. A more appropriate timeline would have been 2000 years from now for this games' fantasies.
- You can only carry 2 guns at a time and there aren't many guns in the game. There is nothing interesting about the guns.
- Gear? Maybe I should try the 1999 difficulty mode to start caring about gear.
- There are no puzzles in this game.
- I never used the skyline in combat. But there was a moment where I very much wanted to use the skyline. It was when I was trying to maintain my distance from HandyMan. Finally I thought the skyline would be useful. Well what do you know, the HandyMan sends electric shocks to the skyline. What could be a more disappointing game mechanic than this?
Verdict : 85/100
If you want to tell a story make a movie or a book but please don't make a videogame. If you never played a shooter before you might like this game.
Notes about Score:
- Score is based on overall entertainment value. I play games for entertainment and not the hardcore type.
- If a game deserves a 50/100 score, I wouldn't buy such a game in the first place. Basically you won't probably see less than 75 score from me
- Less than 85 is not recommended. The game has serious flaws to be not recommended. But that doesn't necessarily mean that it's a very bad game.
- There is a chance that the score might change if I need to compare it to another game that I haven't played yet
