BLOODBOWL vs. CHAOS LEAGUE

I have mixed feelings about this game after buying it cheap in a Steam sale. However I can't really recommend it based on it's history.

Let me explain. Originally Cyanide produced a game called Chaos League (with an expansion called Sudden Death) which was a direct take off of Bloodbowl the board game. After a big legal dispute with games workshop they ended up developing Bloodbowl the computer game.

The trouble is that I don't think this is an improvement on Chaos League. It's biggest advantage is that you can play it online. However otherwise it's not an improvement and in some regards is worse. Personally I think Chaos League is more fun.

Where it falls down in comparison to Chaos League is the dice rolls. Unlike the boardgame version the dice rolls that the AI makes are suspiciously unrandom. e.g. There should be a 1-6 chance of a fumbled throw but my experience of this was far more frequent (6 times in a row once), the AI rarely fails it's dodge rolls etc and simply put the die rolls often don't seem random, certainly I've never seen dice come up with the same results so often in real life.

To my mind another advantage of chaos league is you have the option to play a real time option which you can pause (Which personally I prefer) which allows you to plan your moves and is useful if you want to stop mid-game for any reason. Games also last longer and don't have half time, so no irritating half time whistle just when you were about to score.

Chaos League also has the option to buy and develop star players for each race, which are a lot of fun. But you don't get them in Bloodbowl, I also prefer some elements of the layout in Chaos league and some of the little touches such as when a player is killed a little tombstone appears on the pitch and the players spirit is seen departing into the ether. There are a few minor tweaks and improvements in Bloodbowlbut not enough to make it a better game.

Overall if you want to play against friends I'd say buy the board game. If you want to play against the computer I'd buy Chaos league (Sudden death edition) it's simply more fun and you won't find yourself swearing at the compurter as much. If you want a strategy game buy football manager. I'd only buy this if you intend to play online.
