I found myself saying "dammit" every time I blinked through a moment I tried not to or wanted to see more of.... the game achieved its goal and yes, if you want a good cry this is the game. You will cry, cry and then cry again.

I was having a bad day.
I played this game.
I was no longer having a bad day.

This game is so cute, charming and relaxing. It reminds me of days gone by when I would play Mario & Luigi games on my GBA. I cannot recommend this enough, kudos goes out to adamgryu and anyone else that helped make the game.

Slap on your favourite music and see if you can beat your own record, the sky is the limit with this game in terms of how well you can optimise your path/route to the end. Highly recommend if you enjoy going F A S T !

What can I say about this game that hasn't already been said by now?

This game is a breath of fresh air and after years of waiting it's finally come to PC. Sunset Overdrive feels like a punk inspired Saints Row, from its wacky clothing and guns to its colourful environment and self aware humour you'd be mistaken to think it was anything but, still even with these similarities it manages to be its own game and then some. From the get go the game treats itself as what it is, a game made to just enjoy and let loose, it holds no barred with its self referential humour and 4th wall breaking. Like pop cultural references? You got it! How about a few classic sci-fi 80s references, Maybe something more modern for you? What about a few cult TV sitcom references then? Or what about the most cliched of them all acknowledging the player themselves. Sunset Overdrive is filled with this type of humour and though it can become heavy handed at times to the point of eye rolling this never deterred me from the core of the game itself and the references it made to pop culture I loved made it even sweeter for me.

First and Foremost I have to give a big shoutout to this games style! Customisation is a big thing for me, often times when choosing games like this I'll look for to see if it has good customisation, even games like PUBG it doesn't matter what I need to personalise myself and man this didn't disappoint. There are a sizeable amount of clothing, melee weapon skins and tattoos to choose from to keep most players happy and I was too. Another shout out to its visuals as well, its colourful and vibrant world made it a joy to look at.

MOVEMENT: The movement in this game is fantastic! Coming from a background of games that are high intensity, quick and free flowing, movement is important to me and this game didn't disappoint. In this game the whole core of it, if not obvious already, is about movement and finding ways to string that movement together. Wall running to undergrinding/regular grinding ontop of telephone lines then bouncing from one car to the next then onto a tree then onto a overhanging light post to then swing over onto a small gap of water to then run on that water only to dive into it and leap ten feet into the air to gain some height to get to a vantage point. For the most part despite a few hiccups with how the game determines where you wanted to parkour to it's usually all seamless and fun.

Weapons: Weapons in Sunset Overdrive are a riot. With a nice plethora of rifles, explosives and laser type guns to choose from what ever type of weapon you like there will most likely be a type of weapon for you. I often found myself chaining weapons together to get the most out of them however with the way weapons get upgraded you tend to become a none stop killing machine with whatever you use. Despite the rating system given to you on the weapons for certain enemy types I started stacking upgrades and abilities called “Amps” (which allow you to increase things like weapon capacity or killing power to name a few) and I felt unchallenged by many enemies, there are Amps that do actually make it more challenging by increasing damage dealt to your character but I feel as if this was a substitute and giving up those Amp slots that had all the cool abilities was hard to do. This isn't to say I didn't enjoy it, no, on the contrary I loved being able to feel almighty and powerful but the enemies weren't challenging once I got to a point of being able to power up my gear.

Missions and Side Quests: A lot of the missions were really fun and made perfect use of the gameplay mechanics however a lot of them for me personally became repetitive after a while I.e. NPC needs this item go to several different spots to shoot a bunch of enemies until one of the drops the MacGuffin or parkour around from point A to point B to find out information about the plot it more or less follows these type of missions and are mostly saved thanks to its gameplay. Some of the sidequests/activies that can be done are really enjoyable, things like having to collect physical numbers make you think about what path and string of movement is most optimal to get me them the quickest or others like the having to follow a path of rings trying to make your movement as optimal as possible as well, I have to say it felt very tony hawks which I like.

However the one thing I probably like more than anything else in terms of missions was the “Vats Defence” missions or objectively the tower defence mode, this was one of the modes I wish there were more of or it was further explored. The game switches to night when defending your Vats (Vats are viles filled with overcharge drink used to create the Amps I previously discussed) during this time the whole vibe of the game changes which made it a really nice break from all the monotony. Like many Tower Defence games you get a set up phase to place traps you are given/obtain throughout the game, I loved thinking about what my path most travelled would be and where my blind spots are and place traps down in those areas. These defence missions are very short lived and easy to complete which is a shame because I loved them and feel like would benefit greatly from co-op/multiplayer which is another thing missing from the PC version.

The Soundtrack: What can I say but, yes, just yes, the music is well crafted to fit the games theme of a punk society/rude world and actually has a lot tracks with lyrics referencing things like the weapons in its games. The music is mostly Punk Rock and sticks to this genre throughout the game, me personally I like this type of genre so I liked the whole OST obviously having a few favourites out of them all.

Now (some more) negatives: There's not a whole lot I can say that I already haven't nit picked above so these negatives are more minor issues/bugs the game has itself.

-Music is buggy: often times a track will be playing and then out of nowhere stop for whatever reason even while fighting enemies when its made to be played. Tracks I found often cut over one another, a song has been playing and another will just cut right in and take its place.

-Minor Mission/Gameplay bugs: a few times there have been enemies which have fallen off the map because they spawn in an awakward area (though not very often) and has made me have to abandon and restart the mission. A SideQuest mission I hadn't even accepted yet I somehow completed part of it and it even played a cutscene and when I eventually went and did that mission I did 2 out of the 3 parts it wanted me to do but upon doing the 2nd item on the checklist it soft locked me having to abandon the mission and start again.

-Characters talk over themselves: really really small point if you talk to a character too quickly often times upon approaching them they have dialogue they'll say out loud then when in a cutscene that dialogue continues on over the top of themselves its a little jarring but nothing too big.

All in all I had been looking for a while for a game like this, something that appealed to the sporadic, quirky and frantic minded player such as myself, I loved every second of this game and my only qualm is that it wasn't longer.

PLEASE insomniac games make a second one because I would love it.
