In an hour, I solved twenty small mazes.

Fr though this game is exactly what it says on the tin, it's got 20 small mazes. Some are tougher than others. None of them are horribly mind-bending. It was a fun hour.

Fun game! Took about two hours to reach a win for me, I didn't even realize this is more of a proof of concept / demo.

As one of the very few "A" or "AA" shooters out there, it's really good. As with their Terminator game, Teyon puts a nice balance of mostly-linear combat sections and more open-world exploration sections, which nicely breaks up the game. I recommend if you're looking for a fun FPS and are willing to put up with Being A Cop. Plus I had some fun headcanon about interpreting laws creatively: That guy spraying graffiti saying the mayor sucks? Well, he's just exercising his First Amendment right to political speech, nothing criminal here.

Definitely some bugs in the game, but I personally didn't encounter any that were game-breaking or game-ruining. A couple that were frustrating enough for me to put the game down for a day and come back later, though.

This is a very very soft thumbs-up, with the assumption that some important things will be fixed in an upcoming patch or two.

As of right now, there are a lot of bugs, especially towards the end of the game (which I think implies that they were relying on early access testers instead of testing it themselves and the devs didn't really playtest it themselves). I've seen dialogue boxes repeat in one conversation, dialogue boxes out of order, dialogue boxes assigned to the wrong individuals. Basically the dialogue needs a thorough polish pass.

Alien factions can become homeless but still exist, which can block objectives. I have an operative permanently stuck because I tried to explore a storyline derelict a second time (the game should have prevented me from even trying, but it didn't). Really importantly, one of the final objectives seems to just... not work. There may be some condition that hasn't been met which isn't explained anywhere.

In terms of game balance, it's really easy to break the game's economy. You can get through most of the early and mid objectives without pursuing military research, so you can very easily invest in economy and then invest in science to roll the lategame. Investments in science also let you simply purchase the vast majority of the galaxy, since aliens value it very highly.

So I've got a lot of negative things to say about the game, but I'm still rating it up because at core, it's still fun. Those things can be fixed (and need to be fixed in some cases). The core concept of a storyline 4X game is refreshing and different. Combat takes a bit of thought and you have to decide when to expend resources -- and when its time to break out the nukes. Yet it doesn't require micromanagement or overwhelm you with too many decisions.

In summary, I'm just going to re-iterate my opening sentence: This is a soft recommendation. The game has a bunch of flaws from the exploitable to the game-breaking, and the devs need to put out at least one major bugfix patch. But it's fun!

(And please ignore the chuds whining about some art of characters not being sexy enough for them.)

Fun 5-20 hour game, nothing too difficult, has good feeling of gameplay. Some parts will leave you feeling wanting for a bit more depth and oomph, though.

A fun solo project, has some interesting mechanics and design. Don't expect the world from it, though.

To talk about Hardspace: Shipbreaker, you have to understand that there are two things going on simultaneously.

The first, is the game itself. The actual gameplay of taking apart ships, sorting them into their various components, and turning them in for profit. This part is good. It's a pleasant experience, and the time in EA has made it relatively polished for how much physics is going on (there's still some wonkiness, but that's going to happen with any physics game). I don't have too much to say, but that's praise. It feels good, it's fun, it's a good experience all around.

Second, we have the story. The story is basically a visual novel, and is presented as other characters expositing at you in one of four ways: Before/after the shift, in e-mails, or over comms during the shift. If you don't particularly want to listen to the exposition, sorry you have to listen to the before and after shift messages. I didn't find a way to skip them. At least the comms during a shift can be mostly tuned out while you actually play the game. The plot itself is okay. Evil megacorporation is bad, unions are good. Some of the human moments are touching and sweet, some of them are really boring because it's stopping you from playing the game.

So, the story's ok, and the game's good. But there's one big problem: They don't match. They don't fit together. Most of the story revolves around corporate and managerial malfeasance. However, this malfeasance (almost) never touches the player. You're faced with "extortionate fees" of over 500,000 credits per day. Of course, you can make over 10,000,000 (ten million!) credits per day. So these extortionate fees are... maybe 5-10%? That's less than people pay in real-world taxes! But you don't get that money, it's just paying off a debt, of course. A debt of about 1.2 billion credits. So at a pace of ten million credits per day, it would take around 120 game days (or approximately 30 real-world hours) to pay your debt. If we compare this to real world student loans... um... find me someone who paid off their student loans in 120 days. I'll wait. The training (tutorial) provided to the player is more than adequate, even though we're told that other characters weren't getting sufficient training. Other characters struggle with faulty equipment, but everything provided to the player runs perfectly fine. The game gets harder at progressive points, which are laid out perfectly clearly ahead of time under "certification progress." But when you hit those points, the story acts as though you're being forced to progress.

All of this creates a feeling of ludonarrative dissonance -- the unpleasant feeling when the narrative doesn't match the feelings evoked by gameplay. It's far harder to buy into the story and believe that times are tough when you're making money hand over fist.

However, all this said, I still recommend the game. The core game is absolutely fun, and the feeling of progression is well-tuned. It's just a darn shame that the narrative is so divorced from the actual game.

This game is good. There's some folks who are very loudly complaining about things that do not matter, or would not make a good game. A very common complaint is that your soldiers -- Grey Knights -- get wounded by low-level enemies. That's because this is a game first, and Warhammer 40k second. It wouldn't be a good strategy game if you just plowed through enemies wholesale with no consequences whatsoever.

So, as a strategy game rather than a pubstomp power fantasy, it's a good game. The abilities available to the player are varied and mostly very useful. The enemies also bring to the table a pretty varied collection of abilities, each of which requires some special thought. Chaos Space Marines aren't very dangerous if you're in cover, but heavy stubbers can destroy your cover. If you plan out engagements and set up properly, you'll be able to handle what the game throws at you with the tools you get. I'm playing on the "hard" setting and am doing just fine.

Its not without its issues, of course. There's still some bugs yet to be fixed, and they're frustrating when they come by. There was one bug that made the game unplayable for myself and many others, but it got fixed one day after it was introduced (patch 2 to patch 3). I don't particularly enjoy the game's events, as they're often very feel-bad and give you two or three options that all, seemingly at least, have bad results for you. It'd be nice if events more often felt like a positive occurrence, or at least a tradeoff of one resource for another. I'd also like a greater variety in random missions, there's only three-four varieties on random missions. The map variety, at least, is pretty large. Of course, more maps would always be better, especially as these are specifically designed maps and are not procedurally generated.

This game was interesting when it came out. I didn't think about it for the past few years when I find out the dev's become (or perhaps always was, and it simply wasn't apparent) a miserable pile of hatred. Stay away, stay far far away from all current and future products.
