The Banner Saga is an incredibly rare mixture of beautiful artwork, engrossing story, and engaging tactical combat. There aren't many games out there as good as this series. I really, really hope Stoic continues to expand on the wonderful universe they've created for this series.

An all-time classic. Probably the single best story Final Fantasy has ever produced, and the last of the great FF games. Maybe one day Square Enix will produce games of the caliber again, but it seems doubtful.

What promised to be a fun and humourous JRPG turned out to be a game basically for pedophiles. Probably the first game I've ever played that actually made me sick to my stomach playing it. Absolutely do not recommend.

Tentative Recommendation:

Overall, a decent cyberpunky game with one excellent game mechanic.

First off, most of the gameplay is an incredibly easy version of what you would find in one of the Batman Arkham games. None of the fights are particularly challenging. The one interesting mechanic presented in the game is called "remixing," wherein you watch a memory of a character and then attempt to alter certain aspects of it in order to manipulate their memory. It's a neat idea and pretty fun, but only happens maybe four times total throughout the entire game.

The story itself takes place in a cyber-punky version of Paris wherein memories have become the most valuable form of currency. Again, it's a neat sort of idea but is basically left unexplored and as a result does not make a great deal of sense if you stop to think about the world a bit. The story starts off fairly interesting, but begins to peter out and finishes with a total letdown of an ending.

If you decide to try it, get it on sale for 5-10 dollars or so.

The one decent aspect of this game is the battle system. It's relatively unique and revolves around setting up and moving your characters on the board in order to set up "links" between them. These links allow you to chain attacks, trigger special attacks, and provide0other bonuses to your characters. It's a fun system that you can play around with for a little while. However, every single map is exactly the same, so prepare for boredom to set in pretty quickly.

The real problem is that this game has some of the laziest writing I've ever encountered. There are so many characters in the game and yet not a single one really stands out in any fashion. Each can be boiled down to a basic stereotype ("silent, brooding guy" "ladies man" etc) and are forgotten as soon as they leave your party. Most of the interactions feel completely contrived and feel like they were written by someone who has never actually interacted with a human being before. What little story there is mostly uniteresting and bland. The plot spans five total generations, which is an interesting concept that makes me wish the execution had been better.
