A fun city building game with a unique approach. There's a lot to like and it's still being worked on.

I enjoyed the first torpedo hit, just beautiful. I was THRILLED when I nailed my first manually targeted freighter. But I didn't fall in love with the game until I snuck into Portsmouth, sank two destroyers, and crept back out. In broad daylight.

Want to be a Sub commander? Think like Batman. Preparation is EVERYTHING.

Start with the good. It's a fun game at the beginning, quirky humor, art style that's a definite callback to the original.

But... As you progress the Agents sent against you begin to outclass your minions (and sometimes henchmen) to a ridiculous degree. In the original the answer would be obvious: USE YOUR TRAPS, STUPID!

Except that the traps are wonderful against the little stuff that your minions can already handle, but fall woefully short against the enemies you actually need help with. And I'm not even talking about the Super Agents themselves, the most powerful of which are the first two they throw at you.

In short, it needs some balancing.

Starts out fun, gets challenging. Ok.

Then you start hitting terrain where the combat system simply doesn't let you effectively engage enemies. But the enemies are quite easily able to engage you though. Try running to better terrain? Good luck, the wolves are faster than you and hit like dump trucks.

Foolishness like that turns a 'challenge' into punishment and abuse very quickly. Combat system needs an upgrade to cope with steep terrain situations.

It is a thinker's game. In that sense, many people will find it "hard". It rewards careful consideration, picking your battles instead of just rushing in waving a sword... THAT it punishes.

If you pay attention, each fight will teach you how to better approach similar fights in the future. If you don't, oh look, you're dead. Again.

Sounds harsh doesn't it? The odd part is that it really ISN'T. Not if you abandon most video game logic. And that is what will draw you to it or drive you away. The next bandit probably won't kill you, but the lingering wounds from the last three probably will. Unless you're patient.

Was purchased for co-op with my wife.

Co-op is completely unplayable due to rubber-banding at low ping (40-55). This is utterly unacceptable in a game that is two years old. We would both refund if we could.

Gotta say, I didn't expect much out of what is basically a free trial of the game (Boot Camp campaign) but it's surprisingly good. The AI is well developed and perfectly capable of using it's troops to good effect, unlike a lot of strategy games that rely on overwhelming AI numbers.

The business model isn't as ugly as it first appears as they offer quite a few missions per 'DLC' and it lets you purchase just the campaigns you actually want to play.

Interesting game, challenging, but I could have done without the artificial limits imposed on numerous missions. Timers in particular add a sense of tension that could have been better handled with other methods. To be clear, the time on the timers is typically more than sufficient for the task at hand. The countdown is merely a method of pushing you to be aggressive in the hopes of keeping the game 'fast paced'. Once you realize that most early missions are easily completed in 5-8 turns having a timer of 12 is just irrelevent. Have to say that aside from the timers the missions are a pretty nice spread.

The ambush system is nice when they let you use it, with enemy troopers walking patrol routes waiting to be hit. Some missions are throwbacks to the first game (I'm looking at you retaliation missions) where you wade in guns blazing and the enemy gets free movement into cover.

The game still relies rather heavily on RNG until you can develop your troopers enough to be reliable. That the game manages to entertain in spite of this is rather impressive as other games that rely so heavily on RNG tend to be awkward and painful affairs. In the end it is an enjoyable improvement over XCOM with all the good, and bad, that brings with it.

I played exclusively single player and rather deeply enjoyed my time with the game. You slowly build power as you play, getting the experience of first being desperate prey and later a more confident predator (or at least NOT prey).

It is definately the kind of game that would be more fun with friends than without, as dragging down the larger dinos would be much easier with a bit of teamwork. There are a few things I don't really like, however. Taming the dinos requires keeping them unconscious and feeding them for hours at a time. real time. Unless you can lay hands on large amounts of their favored foods called kibble which varies from being a nightmare to utterly impossible early on. I was rather looking forward to riding a Triceratops into battle... but no, such a task proved a bit more daunting than I really had the time or resources for.

Still recommend the game just for the opportunity to hunt dodos, battle Raptors and run from Carnotaur. And don't feel bad if you have to look up that last one, I know I did. Would definately purchase if I had $30 and will definately watch development moving forward.
