There is a well. You go down.

What more needs to be said?

(...Maybe that you have gunboots. The gunboots are important)

What can I even say? That NieR: Automata is one of the greatest games of all time, something that redefines the nature of the medium while offering an amazing experience on its own terms, with music, art design, and even basic combat all working in sync to deliver something amazing and beautiful?

Yes.

I can say that.

In Metal Gear Rising: REVENGEANCE, you play as a superhuman cyborg who can run on walls and slice dudes in half. You are called upon to use those abilities to protect the president of a small African nation by fighting a robot the size of a skyscraper, then tossing it in the air and slicing it up while it is falling.

This is the first level.

It only gets better from there.

I've only given it a few runs, so I can't say the game always has the same problems, but I figure I should warn any prospective players about this one.

On the upside, the grappling hook. Seriously, this was one of the central focus points for the game, and it delivers. The tranq darts are useful, the vehicles mostly handle well, and the tiger... I shouldn't say too much about the tiger. But man. You will remember the tiger.

The downside? Let's see. Load times. First time out, they weren't that bad, but when I booted this up again to show some friends, it took five minutes to handle the initial load, and there were worse waits later for some of the effects. The elevator was a standout. One run, it goes the second I hit the button. Next time I played, I had time to make a sandwich before it even started to move. And the variable puzzles might add replay, but sometimes they were nearly impossible. The laser grid was tough but fair. The teleportation trick was innovative. But the extended tiger attack sequence pretty much sank the entire playthrough.

On top of that, the achievements might be bugged. I still haven't gotten several, despite earning them more than once.

Still, on the whole, this game was one of the best stealth action games I've ever played (up there with Dishonored, easily.) Anyone interested in grappling hooks, tigers, or the enigmatic Dr. Langeskov should get it immediately.

Whatever became of the moment when one first knew about death? There must have been one. A moment. In childhood. When it first occured to you that you don't go on forever. Must have been shattering. Stamped into one's memory. And yet, I can't remember it. It never occured to me at all. We must be born with an intuition of mortality. Before we know the word for it. Before we know that there are words. Out we come, bloodied and squawling, with the knowledge that for all the points of the compass, theres only one direction. And time is its only measure.

Clever and charming, with engaging core mechanics and a delightful localization. Both the store management and the dungeneering have pitch perfect feel. And there's plenty of game, with multiple adventurers to hire, a wide asortment of equipment, and hidden mechanics.

Recommended.
