Dirty old man ♫ ♫ ♫ ♫ ♫
Aiga-i-le-Tai, Samoa
An elderly man who went out to fetch a morning newspaper ended up driving nearly 400 miles after getting lost and taking a wrong turn onto a major South Auckland highway, police said on Wednesday. The man, 81-year-old James Wayne, eventually stopped and asked for directions after driving for nine hours, from the Manurewa South Auckland to some maori place in Taupo.
James, who did not know where he was, eventually approached a policeman at a petrol station and asked for help late Wednesday.
"This little old man came up to me saying he was lost. He handed me his mobile and asked if I could speak to his wife," said Victorian Police Senior Constable Clayton Smith.
James, who was reunited with his family on Wednesday, said he took the wrong turn and just kept on going.
"I just went out on the road to have a drive, a nice peaceful drive," he told reporters, adding he did not need a satellite navigation device as he'd only been lost once
A homicide investigation has been launched after a man died when a Hamilton drinking session dissolved into violence early today.
Police were called to a Bellmont Avenue address in suburban Chartwell about 1.30am. One man was found dead and another injured.
Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Nigel Keall said police were trying to establish what happened.
"At this stage it appears there has been a drinking session in the garage of the address with a number of people attending.
"The 28-year-old occupier of the home and a male friend became involved in a confrontation with a group of men in the driveway during which our victim suffered a fatal head injury to the side of the head."
Mr Keall said police believed the fatal injury was caused by a weapon of some sort.
Falling to the ground the victim was repeatedly kicked by members of the group and his friend suffered facial injuries when he tried to intercede.
Police have cordoned off the area and a scene examination was under way.
Mr Keall said a focus of the scene examination was recovering the weapon used while the inquiry team would be working to establish the identities of those who were at the address.
"We'd like to hear from anyone who attended the party who hasn't already been spoken to by police and from anyone in the area who may find a weapon dumped on their property."
