Played it, loved it, beat it, went back to find the secrets. Great game.

Satisfyingly difficult, but I never felt I was banging my head against a skill wall. Incremental progress was always achievable. Lots of fun secrets to discover, and I was engaged with the game to look up guides to find all the tricky bits.

I have ~175 games in Steam. This is one of SEVEN in my favorites list (others on my list that are similar: Spelunky, Enter the Gungeon, Rex Rocket, The Swapper). If you like some of the others, you'll dig this.

It's basically: Metroid, Mega Man, and Cave Story. It is screen-punchingly hard, but also extremely compelling, and you'll be trying "one more time" over and over.

One bad part is the lives counter (20 lives). It's always pretty easy to get back to where you were so the consequence for losing all 20 lives is pretty minimal, but it doesn't add anything to the game other than frustration.

The game is too frugal with it's teleporters, so you'll traverse a long way to a boss, only to get killed (it takes a while to learn their patterns) and then you'll need to work your way back. I recommend going to your Users/[your username here]/AppData/Local/Rex Rocket/ and creating copies of the save files just after you've gotten to the Boss area. This way you'll be able to reload just before the bosses. And trust me..you'll need to.

I strongly recommend using a controller as others have suggested. I also strongly recommend going to the game options to change directional control from the analog stick to the D-pad.

Similar to Metroidvanias: You acquire new abilities and items which encourage you to revisit old locations and open new areas.
Similar to RPGs: There is a leveling and character customization mechanic, gear and weaponry to acquire and buff, and companions to assist you.
Similar to DMC: There is a very fun but not overly complex melee / combo system. It's not hard to get the hang of, but adds some depth to otherwise simple, enjoyable swordplay.

Somehow, the game is so much more than the sum of its parts would suggest. Highly recommended.

Lord, it's finally released, and *dare I say it* better than the beta. Great game. Play in 20 minute chunks.

This game is awesome. Like Portal, but more atmospheric.
