In order to set up L4D2 splitscreen, I copied the code in the fourth quote box of the first post in the linked thread, which is labeled "360 Config".
I then took this text and copied it into the CFG file "splitscreen_on" in default file location C:/Program Files/Steam/Steamapps/Common/Left 4 Dead 2/Left4Dead2/cfg. You can open this file with a text editor like notepad. Make sure you copy the code after the existing text; It doesn't do anything, but I don't really know anything about it.
You can edit certain lines in the code like "ss_splitmode 1" to "ss_splitmode 2" to go from horizontal to vertical splitscreen, and there are lines for look inversion (which is on by default) and sensitivity that you might want to look for. The line "name2 Player 2" sets the name of the second player, and you can change it by replacing "Player 2" with whatever you want.
Once the CFG file is edited and saved, then you can start up L4D2. It is important to diconnect and reconnect the 360 controller during the game's loading screen after the intro movie so that the game detects it properly. Once in the game, call up the developers console and enter the command "exec splitscreen_on". Then enter the command "ss_map <mapname>", where <mapname> is the name of a map file. If you type in "ss_map" followed by a single space, theen the console should give you a list of the available maps. After this command is entered, the game will load up the specified map. After the map is loaded, enter the command "connect_splitscreen localhost 2" to activate player 2, and go kill some zombies. If there is an issue with the controls such as both the controller and mouse controlling the same player, then something went wrong with the controller detection and you need to restart the game and disconnect and reconnect the controller again.
