I love Super Robot Wars...Really loved the OG series on GBA and finally for the first time we get a PC release for English speaking territories!

And i personally find it kind of meh.

Let's get the best parts of the game out of the way first. The game looks mostly great, with a crap ton of attack animations and voice acting with those attacks to make the mechs feel like pretty much spot on except with a slightly larger head. The only weak part would be some of the levels themselves with some really low res textures. Sounds are pretty much spot on as well.

Now....about everything else...

The Story is...painfully mid. It is extremely patchwork in it's design and that's kind of a deliberate choice (more on this later). Older SWR games tell their story FAR better than this and make it feels like each of the different series and their respective universes existed together. The writing is hit and miss, and i feel like the 'localisation' of some lines is too 'local' if you know what i mean?

Balance is completely borked, even before they removed the upgrade/level cap. The ExS system feels like it's unneeded as you're already insanely powerful in most cases, the Multi-hit ExS especially. Combinded with the zeal spirit, and parts that give SP on kills, you can have a single mech take nearly infinite turns. You might just say "Play on a harder difficulty" and i say 'I AM". i'm playing on super expert and it's still too easy. All the older games were more challenging than this. You could just say "what about super expert+?" and i personally don't want to play with a ruleset designed to knee cap the player because the base game wasn't balanced around the intended difficulties in the first place.

This kind of goes hand in hand with the mission count. Normally a SWR games has around about 60ish missions. That's a fine length for the pace of a SWR game. The issue here is that there are, including DLC, 315 SODDING MISSIONS!!! No other SWR game has more missions that this! "Tons of content" you think? Sure... but out of those 315, only 62 missions actually matter in the long run and 95% of SWR missions are kind of long with tons of enemies.

Finally we come to the crux of the matter that kinda links into everything and that is the DLC....

DLC isn't exactly bad in terms of a concept, as long as the DLC is worth the money and it's integrated well into the game. While you get plenty of extra mechs and many new 'missions' to play the major issue is how it's integrated and presented.

See, the joy of super robot wars games is often watching multiple different mecha franchises interact with each other and what happens when villains and heroes team up. With the DLC this isn't the case, or it barely is. Pretty much ALL the DLC is 'It came from a parallel universe' and their missions are pretty much either find more members of said universe or do the thing your series is best known for without much a of a change. It creates a incredible amount of bloat that the game can't really accommodate for well. Only DLC that kind links in well enough is the Hi-Nu Gundam and Red 5+.

And the worst thing? The game was designed around the existence of the DLC missions which is why the story is kind of a mess. ALL the DLC missions clog up the mission select menu to a point that it's demoralising, and they all unlock over the course of the story you'll always have at least a entire page worth of them at all times.

Make no mistake though. For all the negative things i've said Super Robot Wars 30 is still a Super Robot Wars game more or less. You can still have fun with it. It's just that this SWR game is bloated and doesn't have enough care into it's design.

Ultimately, i feel like the game designers need to lean back from 'power fantasy' and more on game balance and design.

TL:DR - Not bad, base game is worth it on sale, but game is too long, plus DLC ♥♥♥♥♥ with the entire game.

I love a lot of the QoL and most of the changes, it's fantastic! but....

I HATE the counter system, ALOT. It's messed with the tooltips of every single unit and makes them completely generic and boring.

I also hate the resource changes. Why do units that previous cost crystal now don't? Why do my abilities on my units cost stupid amounts of crystal to activate?

These two things I've mentioned are big enough of a problem that i'm not recommending this mod. If they are reverted i'll change my vote.

This is the best SMT game I've played in a long while!

Also, these devs are chads. Adding not only characters from the last touhou game that came out just over a month ago, but also adding in additional characters, spells, and upgrades for free. All for $15 AUD!

This is honestly everything i wanted in a Modern Armored core game.

- Balanced movement speed between 4 and 5. (Fast, but not to the point that it's the only thing that matters)
- Multiple Endings via NG+.
- Strong customisation with a good balance of parts (better than prior games imho.)
- Lots of cool things to fight with modern visuals.
- PC PORT THAT ACTUALLY RUNS REALLY WELL!
- Zero microtransations.

FROM SOFTWARE delivered, and this game deserves to be bought at full price to signal to both publishers and devs that this is more of the stuff we want.

Avoid!

Owlcat games inserted spyware into this game, and while they have backtracked and removed it sets a extremely unsettling example of what companies can do to gamers at any time if left unchecked.

A 40K retro shooter done right, bar a tiny few issues that can be fixed with a patch or two.

If you're going to grab any of the DLC for this game, this one should be a priority.

Not only does it offer the same as the other DLC packs (2 new areas and 6 new rare customers) it adds a interesting new challenge at the end of it.

A rather absorbing Touhou themed restaurant manager with a cute art style to match.

It's worth both your time and money.

Early Access Review
I've played a lot of ARPGs like this. I'm a big fan of the Genre and i'm one of the people who bought this game at full price. After a good amount of time with this game i've come to my final conclusion of it.

This game...is rather boring. It's painfully slow and the story is dull and rips off Chrono-trigger in a extremely bad way.

Even though this review was made during early access i don't see much that will change at this point. They've spent so much time from patch 0.8 to 0.9 with so little that has actually changed that i've lost faith in the developers.
