What a great story game... Truly enthralling, every time you play it, it plays out different... well until you see every branching path i suppose.

I've went through the game about 6 times now... and each one was WILDLY different.

Totally worth the cost of admission on the story telling alone! Bravo devs!

Strange I never reviewed this game.

Its great. Casual Farming sim with some combat bits to break it up with.

Lots to do, lots to discover, tons of ways to play.

If you are looking for a Chill game to play... you found it.

Fun, Fast Paced, Action

Never have you felt more like a Starship Trooper then in this game.

Bugs invading your worlds? Automatons at your doorstep? The Helldivers are on their way!

Resupply is ready. Load up and deliver some Democracy!

Are you doing your part?

oof...

this game has a serious problem with Power Creep and Oversaturation.

there is.... SOOOOO much to do... and that sounds awesome! and it is! until you realize how much you ACTUALLY have to do to even THINK about being competitive in the PvP scene... or even the End Game Raiding Scene.

if you go into this game thinking you are going to start raiding once you hit max level, you are dead wrong. You have a SERIOUS back log of quests, grinds, unlocks and things you have to chew through to catch up.

Its the biggest reason i stopped playing.

the game is Great, and its a lot of fun, but i cannot recommend it anymore unless you have no life, no responsibilities, and endless time to dump into the title. You will play this game, and ONLY this game.

Game was a lot of fun though, fond memories, both PvE and PvP. but to get to the point where I could even play either of those modes like i used too today... naw, i dont have that kind of time.

maybe you do?

A fun game if a bit rough around the edges.

Hopefully they keep on updating this, if they do it could be a real contender vs Dark and Darker.

Its actually quite a lot of fun.

they seemed to have fixed most of the bugs from launch. I'm really enjoying myself playing the game in the fallout 76 wasteland. Lots of quests, tons of content. About to get my first set of power armor, joining the Brotherhood of Steel faction.

All in all, I like it.

Ok... This review is for the regular person. A person like me before I bought this game... I knew nothing about it, nor the other projects that may or may not be created... none of that matters.

This is a review about Exanima... as it stands, right now July 3rd, 2023.

Is it worth the price of admission? Yes. Hands down Yes, the game is fun.

Now that thats out of the way, lets talk about why.

The game seems clunky and silly at first, then once you actually start to learn how to parry, engage, keep distance and attack, it becomes much more... it becomes tactical, refined, a deadly dance between foes.

Sadly this takes about 4-8hrs of gameplay before you start to REALLY understand the control mechanics and even then you are prone to making mistakes of movement still.

The music is somber but fits the game's aesthetic, The sounds are mostly crisp from the clomp of boots to the subtle ♥♥♥♥♥ of armor plates as you march along. Swords smashing upon armor never gets old, and you can tell when you REALLY score a solid blow because its SOUNDS like you did (and usually the enemy is staggered dramatically or even falls down)

There are currently 2 game modes you can play, and this is a Single player game only.

Mode 1, is the Main game, you awaken basically naked in a dungeon without your memory, you must find clues, and equipment to stay alive from the undead that now walk the halls. Uncover the mad mystery of what happened as you delve ever deeper into the dangerous depths.

Mode 2, Is the immensely fun, Gladiatorial Arena mode. You create a Gladiator School, and Owner, and must hire slaves, or mercenaries to battle for you.... You can battle yourself... but if you die... its the end of the school... better to leave the fighting (and dying) to those who are paid.

The Hired slaves are useless to start with, inept sacks of flesh that need to be pounded into shape, if one dies... no one cares and the day moves on. You can control these fighters in the game, and equip them and train them as you see fit.

Hired Mercenaries however are NOT controlled by you and fight independently... they also come with their own equipment and skills and you have no control over those items either. Really they are fodder when you dont want to risk your prized trained fighters.

The only downside to the Arena mode, is the fact it IS a touch grindy.... you need to do a LOT of battles to make the money required to actually start outfitting your fighters well. Your own personal skill in the game really helps here as not taking tons of damage each day is key to keeping your men alive.

all in all, i see a game with hundreds of hours of playability before it gets old/stale, simply because of the Arena Mode itself. Probably the best Gladiator sim that's been released in recent memory... and its not even the main focus of the game lol.

This is a good and fun game... but it also comes with some Caveats.

1. The game is NOT complete... as of writing this review only Chapter 1 is completed. (about 10ish hours of gameplay for the main quest not including sides)
2. Balance isnt perfect yet... Magic is by FAR the most powerful option for combat in the game, requires no ammo, can be chain fired like a machine gun, and far out damages any other weapon in the game.
3. Ai is primitive, but challenging enough to still be fun. They mostly just run at you in a straight line, or fire missile weapons / use magic at a distance.
4. There are some rough edges and bugs around quest progression... there is a couple of side quests that if not done in the right order will force you to go a path you might not want to go.

All that said, this IS a fun game, and i really enjoyed my 14+ hours in the game so far. I chose magic because I've always enjoyed playing a magic user in RPG's, didn't realize it would be by FAR the strongest choice in this game, an interesting turn of events for sure.

Really hope they fully flesh out this game and complete all of the chapters, ill be looking forward to moving on beyond chapter 1! (the story is a grim-dark version of Camelot's future)

So... final verdict... Its worth the 29.99 asking price, you will have fun, and as long as they keep up the development and finish out the rest of the chapters of the game it will be a great value.
