If you have somehow missed this franchise, take a stab at ME1. With tons of lore and a fleshed out world, Mass Effect has been my most engrossing game experience.

To be totally honest, this beats any Final Fantasy I've played since the first one! Using the Unreal Engine with fantastic results, the Last Remnant has a mediocre story and one of the best fighting systems I've ever seen in a JRPG. The ability to craft all sorts of items, and command /huge/ armies by about half way though the game make this a fantastic title. If you see it on sale, and you enjoy JRPGs, this is well worth your money.
Also, it doesn't come with all the bugs that plagued the 360 launch, but it can be very frustrating at times - battles get longer throughout the game, and eventually you'll get into 30-60 minute long battles. If you lose one of these, you do have to start from your last save point, and this can be exceedingly frustrating.
All in all though, a great game!

Just how nerd are you? Play D&D? Argue with your friends about minute details of Star Wars or Lord of the Rings? Watched at least one episode of Star Trek all the way to the end? You'll probably like this game. This is using an OLD SCHOOL system, google rougelike and you'll instantly learn what this game is pretty much all about. But it's got some decent music, and many of the items have witty and amusing writing. All and all, this is about as 'hard core' a role playing experience you'll find outside of nethack (another, free, rougelike).
