La Genèse

Louis-Philippe, roi des Français, créée la Légion étrangère le 9 mars 1831
Il reprend alors une formule qui a fait ses preuves sous l'Ancien Régime ou dans la Grande armée: les étrangers au service de la France.
Il introduit cependant une nouveauté: regrouper ces étrangers au sein d'une même unité plutôt que de former des régiments par nationalité.

The Genesis

Louis-Philippe, king of the French, created the Foreign Legion on March 9, 1831
It then takes a formula that has proved its worth in the Old Regime or in the Great army: foreigners in the service of France.
It introduces a novelty, however: combine these foreigners in a single unit rather than forming regiments by nationality.

Louis-Philippe, König der Französisch, erstellt der Fremdenlegion 9. März 1831
Er greift dann eine Formel, die sich bewährt hat unter dem Ancien Régime oder in der Großen Armee: Ausländer im Dienste von Frankreich.
Es führt aber auch eine Neuigkeit: gruppieren von Ausländern in einer einzigen Einheit bilden, als der Regimenter von Nationalität.
