At first I really wasnt sure if this was going to be a big waste of time and money but to my surprise
it can deliver a really entertaining time killer.

THE GOOD

1: very realistic .. well at least to a civilian.
2: complex game mechaincs to those of us who dont like our games dumbed down.
3: strong sense of acomplishment when missions are completed
4: good variety of operations consisting of single missions, campaign and training.
5: A good challenge but far from impossible once youve learned your submarine skills.
6: Lots of replay value.
7: non linear game play do it your own style quiet or loud just be aware of critical objectives you are rewarded or punished based off your operating decisions.

THE BAD

1: No real training or explaining on how to actually operate ANYTHING ON YOUR SUB!
making life very difficult in the beginning. BTW I hope you learned how to use sonar and stealth tactics for a submarine in high school otherwise its very touch and go for the first 5 hours.
2: A hard sell for full price 20 dollars based off its a 1997 game best to find it on sale.
FINAL

I give this game a 7.0

A great simulator , if you can take the time experiment and read all the manuals and figuar out how a nuclear sub actually works you will find this game has a surprisingly high fun factor even for a 1997 game.

You bought a manual with Jane's - the game was in second place! Sadly today, we live hectic lives that were nothing like 25-30 years ago. I miss those days. Jane's will always be my passion along with DID EF2000/TACTCOM/F22 ADF

To be fair, the physical copy I had back when it was new and still owned by Jane's Combat Simulations came with a two-inch thick laminated, spiral-bound manual that covered the various systems and how they work, heh. That said, the in-game documentation is excellent, and even includes full details about all the ships, systems, procedures etc.

Prior to starting Jane's Combat Simulations, Jane's was known (and might still be) for making ridiculously meticulous books detailing various technology and especially military hardware. Their sims under the Jane's Combat Simulations name were known as some of the best and most realistic, especially for their time. As an avid fan of what are referred to as "study sims" (such as this), the first game from a company OTHER than Jane's I encountered that delivered that level of detail was DCS's A-10C module.

With this game, welcome to the golden age of simulation gaming, but thankfully today we have things like DCS, at least for the air.

gamer_jp! Your review inspired me to get this game finally, and I realy like it:steamhappy:! SubSims/Naval Combat games are more sophisticated, complex than FPS/Horror-games etc(thats my actually genre). But playin all the time the same genre with killing Zombies or Deathmatch becomes "boring" after a while:steammocking:! I always wanted to play a game with Submarines but it was no high priority til now.
Now Im ready for this genre first I purchased Atlantic Fleet followed by Battlestattions:Pacific/Midway,UBOAT and now 668(I) Hunter/Killer:steamhappy: and I wonder why not much more ppl play this cool game? Thanks for U review!
