the game is a real gem. In my humble opinion its one of the best strategy games ever made. just ignore the metascore. many german magazines rated it higher than rome 1.
and i dont understand why people here think this game is simple. it is actually pretty complex and provides loads of statistics and data to the player - some of it maybe a bit "hidden" for the superficial players. like already mentioned, the land battles can be very challenging, even for experienced armchair-generals -but i dont consider this to be a bad thing...at all. Also this game had sea battles long before the tw-series and they still look fantastic. but the best thing about this game is still the music. especially the tracks that play during the map-mode are incredibly beautiful. check this one out guys, you won't regret it. for 3 euros its a steal.

In regard to crashes: I bought the game a while ago on CD (not Steam version), and I had the same kinds of crashes during battles (or at the close of battles) once I upgraded to Windows 7. To fix this, I right-clicked on the game's launcher shortcut, selected "Properties," then selected the "Compatibility" tab. Next, check the box beside "Run in compatibility mode for:" and select Windows XP (Service Pack 3). Then click "Apply" and "OK." Now, the game never crashes on me, ever. I hope this helps!

Nowadays there are better games for land and sea battles but on the strategic level this game still suprises me as being quite challenging even in later time periods. Also when playing the same country for a second or third time the result can be quite different. This is something very few (strategic) games manage to achieve.

and you can say it came out years before empire which is accurate, but it came out years after other total war games, which it tries to copy it just beat empire to this time period. but as i previously wrote, no morale is ridiculous and makes it unplayable

i'm not sure but doesn't this game have no morale?? when you are in a battle your troops or the a.i's troops will just sit and battle to the death no matter what.

i believe this is the reason i couldn't even play the game, it's absolutely ridiculous

An very underrated game especially when you know it came out years before Empire Total War did. I still have the CD so I didn't need to buy it via Steam.

I played this back in '05 and found it dissappointing. Having become used to Total War games, what really turned me off was the complete lack of a morale mechanic during the land battles.

I think its the simplicity of the game combined with a bit of a challenge that makes it so enjoyable
