"Real-time X-Com" is an apt description.

Bought it for the mp, but the single-player campaign is extremely well done. In mp you only control one character while giving simple follow/stay commands to rescued AI marines.

In single-player you utilize bullet-time pause to fully control squads. You'll decide which characters to bring with you on a mission, outfit them, and level them. The degree of replayability is high, since each character levels separetely, while belonging to one of eight classes. You're encouraged to attempt missions with different class combos, which will completely change your tactics and playstyle - this keeps things fresh.

Two characters of the same class can be built differently by altering their stats, powerups, abilities and gear (all of which you find as loot during missions). I have one assault character built as a speedy, evasive, melee expert, used for hit-run bombing alien spawn tunnels. I have another specializing in grenade AOE support, and another as a pseudo-sniper marksman who holds the mid-line.

SP feels a lot like Dawn of War 2's campaigns during realtime, but the slo-mo pause gives it a tactical X-com feel. You'll also get overrun and die easily even on normal difficulty, just like classic X-com.

Even though you only control one character in MP, things are even hairier than they are in SP, since there's no pause. The easiest "recruit" difficulty will slaughter many players. I just finished my first "recruit" difficulty multiplayer mission at 27h (though much of it was spent in single-player).

I'm having a blast with it.
