For all the aspiring sg CS (whether source or 1.6) players out there, heres a few tips you can adopt to attain a higher level of play:
1. work on your aim. get the right mousepad, mouse, crosshair, monitor, resolution (wide screen and high res is a NONO for 1.6 haha saw some teams on sat night wcg). for starters. deathmatching and aim maps help a lot.
2. get a few good like-minded teammates. I’ve never believe in an imbalanced team (teammates with bigger egos than others or even individual skill gap). growing together with every match helps a lot in building understanding and teamwork.
3. regularly view euro demos and understand the meta theories and psychological play behind their strats/decision making during clutches and mould it to suit your team. granted strat calling is everyone’s cup of tea so this might require a smarter leader-type player to disseminate to their peers. a good place to start would be http://www.gotfrag.com (1.6) and http://www.cadred.org (source)
4. don’t cheat online (or even on LAN). its quite a known fact an annoying number of players in this region cheat blatently (aimbot toggles/wallhax). trust me when i say your movement roughly determines your skill level and a mid-game sudden torrents of wallbangs/flashkills/anything thats pretty amazing but improbable just makes you look real obvious. if you’ve cheating for an extended period of time because its fun or you’re a lonely dude, then its time to get off that computer. fyi, pros don’t cheat.
5. approach a match with an open mind. a lot of times i see teams before match say “OMFG WE’RE PLAYING xyz sponsered pro team die already”. I’ve seen so many upsets in my time and usually adrenaline/male ego/loud verbal positive encouragements helps a lot. don’t underestimate minnows either. what goes around comes around.
6. lead a healthy lifestyle. junk food is BAD especially for lan situations. theres so much shouting that you’ll probably go hoarse faster if you’re eating a lot of deep fried food. overloading is bad also sleeepiness will set in and oh, kick the chain smoking habit its a liability especially in draggy or overtime scenarios. drink alcohol in moderation and don’t get knocked out before a match. blood circulation to your brain will be affected.
7. do not be daunted in defeat. a lot of times in CS you WILL be at the wrong end of a really devastating crushing embarrassing humiliating morale-sapping yadayada… defeat. you can see a lot of first-timers get permanently scarred when they play some ahem teams and those who don’t recover disappear into other worlds of warcraft . lessons can always be learned and kanye west said work it make it do it makes us harder better faster stronger.
8. set goals. nuff said nobody can probably devote a lot of time for the game but at least make it productive during training sessions/meetups.
