Rebellion is the first standalone expansion for Sins of a Solar Empire (2008) and Stardock has released a trailer of epic proportions. It features the telling of a dark tale of usurping forces, oppressed armies, civil war, and some of the best space ships we have seen in a video game.
The expansion features a graphical overhaul to the system as well as Rebel and Loyalist factions for each of the three races. The new sub factions come with unique ship loadouts and resources for your disposal. While the battles in Sins of a Solar Empire are already immense, they are only going to get larger with the expansion. Be prepared for co-op marathon sessions with your friends where you will certainly need to ally together to explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate the oppressive alien fleets.

Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion combines the best elements of real-time strategy with the depth normally reserved for 4X games. Players take command of a space-faring civilization that is fighting for its very existence in a vast interstellar war. This conflict will see players colonize planets, battle pirates, research new technologies, conduct trade, use diplomacy and engage in epic battles with massive fleets.

Each episode so far, is quite frankly, simply some of the best storytelling of a game I've experienced since the days of Planescape Torment. Rather than the normal "oh look, zombies. Pew pew", the series takes on a much deeper look at how surivors actually manage to live in a world where zombies are far more numerous than humans. Full of betrayal, theft, starvation and panic moments, the game puts imporantant decisions in front of you that do appear to actually matter. Expect to live with the consequences of your actions unless you want to play the entire episode again, as there's no "collection" of saves which (as in other games), often significantly lessens the impact of what you do because you can reload. Even more interestingly, your decisions can and will come back and bite you later in the game (and even other episodes!).
An evening per episode is usally all that's required, and you'll be left wanting more.
A smartly written piece of game art, both thought provoking and inspiring. What art really should be, and I'm pleased to see that a company has been bold enough to try it in a new medium.
If you are expecting the next Chrono Trigger or anything actiony based on it's graphics alone, think again as this is far more akin to reading a book than playing a game. The game elements are distinctly the minority to the story, but don't think that's a bad thing however, as it's gentle pace and subtle undertones of some serious issues of real life that are often overlooked in will stay with you long after you finish. It's intelligent and thought provoking, and reminded me that I am still not entirely dead inside which is, quite frankly, an incredible feat for any medium at all. After playing this, if you didn't feel anything at all, you probably have a serious disorder and should seek medical help.
Short, sharp, and incredibly clever. Left me asking questions at the end and a sense of dread throughout. Beautiful puzzle design which while never too complciated to solve, do sometimes make you think hard and never stays on one paritcular puzzle element for long, keeping it feeling fresh from start to finish. Graphically, they've done something really clever by keeping the entire game in greyscale, and it shows by enhancing the enitre morbid feel the game projects. Brilliance.
