I made a review ages ago but I feel like a new proper review is in order for GoW. My old review was kinda shallow anyways.

Gems of War is a mobile game that exists on Steam, IOS, Android, XBox, PlayStation, and the Nintendo Switch. It's at its core, fun time-wasting nonsense. Time-wasting nonsense I have 1000+ hours in.

Gems of War comes with all the drags of an typical mobile game. It's a free game that you can play forever and get all the same progression items and cards as paid players, but sometimes just a few weeks behind. The worst pay wall I've seen is the ability to get a new card a month earlier than everyone else, and all things considered, that's not that bad. I've spent $200 something on the game over the past 5 or 6 years, but in a game I've got this much enjoyment out of it's worth it.

Now I should mention the game isn't balanced. The Mythic and Legendary cards are ALWAYS better than their lower rarity counterparts, save for a few special examples, because once you spend the time and resources to unlock their traits they get a distinct advantage in a unique trait. While most cards get the traits "Big" and "Huge", gaining 1 or 2 health on 4/5 gem matches respectively, the legendary card Behemoth has the trait "Immense", giving him 10 health instead. The progression in the game is to get stronger, and in PvP, if a player paid money or has been playing a good amount longer than you, then get ♥♥♥♥♥♥ lmao.

In regards to the game's progression, the game has a lot of ways to get more stats on your cards, and has some pretty crazy power-creep too. I remember around 2018 the way to get more stats was to level up your kingdoms, so I spent a ton of time and resources, as well as a bit of money (optional), to get the 4 kingdoms that increased your magic stats as high of a level and power as possible. I took a break from the game, and not only have they increased the max power and level of each kingdom by around 50%, but added a whole new kind of kingdom called a faction with its own power system to get all new stat rewards. On top of that they added a sort of "prestige" level to troops that are maxed out otherwise, and badges that just apply straight stats to your troops.

After all the time I have in this game, I can't touch the upper echelons of the playerbase. If you want a game you can pick up any time, and just make progression, pick up Gems of War.

Now there is one thing I'd like to gripe about. It's the amount of gameplay required in the late game. Once you get to a certain point, you need to find yourself a half decent guild to sit in, and a guild is going to need you to contribute. Some guilds just require you to participate in events and click some buttons every week, but if you want any real rewards, you need to play in a guild that's gonna require a couple hours of play each day. The reason I took a break from this game was I was sick of eeking out that 500,000 gold my guild required each week, and when I joined an easier guild, the slow pace of rewards in comparison to my old guild was unbearable.

Uh, get it, it's free, thanks.
