The 24th Panzer Division was formed in late 1941 from the 1st Cavalry Division based at Königsberg, Ostpreußen. It served under the Fourth Panzer Army in Army Group South of the Eastern Front. From midsummer to late fall 1942 the division took part in the conquest of Stalingrad. Consequently, from late December 1942 to February 1943 it defended the Stalingrad pocket, resisting major Soviet counter-offensives.
In spring 1943 it served in Normandy, later Italy, and then went back to the Eastern Front where it defended Kiev and the Dnepr Bend. During spring months of 1944 it took part in the first Jassy-Kishinev offensive. Later, the division saw action in Poland, Hungary and Slovakia. In keeping with the Division's mounted origins, the 24th Panzer's personnel wore the golden-yellow Waffenfarbe of the cavalry rather than Panzer pink.
The 24th Panzer Division is a realism unit for Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad, established in October 2010. The unit’s core members are a collection of veteran 1st SS Division Leibstandarte members, who have been with RO for many years. With our experience in realistic unit form and function, the 24th Panzer Division will be conducted in a professional manner in all its endeavors. Specifically, as a German realism unit we intend to live by that classification and use real German tactics to conquer a fierce and determined enemy. You have a chance to join us and become a highly skilled and diversified Panzergrenadier in Panzergrenadier Regiment 26, or drive the most advanced tank of the day in Panzer Regiment 24.
