Last Epoch has instantly joined the pantheon of great ARPGs, standing tall among the likes of Grim Dawn, Diablo II, and Path of Exile. It has respect for tradition in this space, but also innovates in ways that make you think "why wasn't this done earlier?". Both easy to understand and with high-end possibility for complex builds and crafting, there's truly something for everyone.

Currently 25 hours deep into a Void Knight playthrough which has been one of my most satisfying characters in *any* ARPG so far. Nice hefty attacks, skimming by on low life just to soak my HP bar back up with life leach, and dishing out massive void strikes which have a chance to summon a shadow copy of myself to strike again! It feels great!

Pros:
+ Hefty feeling combat. It FEELS like an "action" RPG, moreso than its peers
+ Incredible class identity. A mix of the standard classes you'd expect, but also some very cool new ideas!
+ Every skill has it's own skill tree, allowing for so much customisation and build-crafting.
+ Crafting system is incredible. Even fodder loot is interesting because it can be broken down to enhance your current gear.
+ Devs really care for their game and are very active in the community, are listening to feedback

Cons
- Some long load times and server instability at times (though I understand this is priority #1 in terms of fixes).
- Endgame loop is reportedly a little empty currently, another aspect I trust will be addressed later on.
- Some simplified ability descriptions fail to explain true damage calculations
- Character sheet could be better (e.g, shows % damage increase, but not sources of flat damage increases)

----------------

1/03/2024 Current reviews are mixed due to launch week server instability. I personally haven't had many issues playing from OCE (lower pop), but solo play is always viable and doesn't rely on these servers.

Probably the best fighting game on the market, with incredible stylised visuals and my personal favourite OST right now.

While the netcode is fantastic, allowing you to play with play with people from distant regions, the skill-based matchmaking is essentially non-existent. It's arduous to find online matches, and impenetrable for a newcomer as the majority of players in open-play are very experienced. Having to manually walk around a 2D plane trying to find another player not already engaged in a match takes too long, when other fighting games will match you with an opponent of similar skill with a single button press.

It's a 10/10 game, but as my (and many others) main goal in these games is fighting online, the genuinely terrible multiplayer system is a big sore point.

You have to be the sort of person who enjoys learning to get the most out of Path of Exile. Your goal shouldn't be to smash out end-game bosses, but to learn something new each time you sit down to play, at least until you've got a good understanding of the basics. If you find incremental learning fun, adjusting your strategy based on the information you have at hand rewarding, and want to continually grow as a player in terms of both knowledge and skill, I couldn't think of a better game for it.

It's daunting, but take little nibbles. One thing at a time. The game is just as much about understanding as it is doing cool action RPG things.

Also I like when big number go bigger :-)

Another potentially amazing game ruined by unnecessary level scaling.

Feels great to play, has a cool setting, merges souls style gameplay with punchy guns. All down the drain because the developers didn't want to take time to balance their game. They just crammed a scaling mechanic in and called it a day. Wonderful.

I've noticed a sad trend with recent reviews of Grim Dawn, many of them are using this space to dunk on Diablo IV rather than speak to this game's merits. I think it's important that we all approach this with a mature mindse-DIABLO IV IS A BRAINDEAD MESS OF A GAME MADE TO SQUEEZE MONEY OUT OF A CASUAL AUDIENCE AND CAN SUCK A FART OUT OF MY LATE AUNT'S ASS

Anyway, Grim Dawn is the most mechanically rich ARPG I've ever played, with shockingly diverse build variety and absolutely amazing class identity. It's a masterclass in ARPG design and, personally, I feel it is the pinnacle of the genre.

Unbearably unfunny. The memes they reference were dated in 2017, and haven't aged much better in 2023. The tone of the game tries to be witty and comment on other fantasy titles, but comes across lazy and referential rather than satirical. Wow, you replaced a letter in this town's name so it sounds like a city in Warcraft, but *isn't!*, oooh, you break the 4th wall to tell me it's a *game* we're in, so clever! It's the sort of humour TikTok kids make fun of millennials for, but dialled up to 11 (or should I say, OVER 9000?!!?!! ROFLMAO!!!!)

I can often overlook things like this, but the amount narration and garbage attempts at humour I was subjected to in < 60 minutes made this genuinely painful to give an honest chance.

ZeroRanger is one of the best games I've ever played, and I'm 100% confident System Erasure will provide another near-spiritual experience with this title.

Sokoban usually gives me the ♥♥♥♥♥, but this was an insta-buy. No hesitation.

(Also the music and visuals alone are worth the pennies it costs to add this to your library).

I'm approaching 100 hours of Rimworld and there's still so much to learn. This game is massive; I've never seen anything like it. Despite how many moving parts there are, it's surprisingly easy to understand as most things behave how you'd expect based on real-world understanding.

Between the incredible modding community, varied biomes, endless combination of colonist needs and expansive DLC, this game is practically endless. I've never even come close to "winning" a game of Rimworld, but I keep coming back to try new things. Quite simply, this is one of the best games I've ever played.

Will report back in another 100 hours. Maybe, by then, I'll have learned how to play :P

Edit: 100 hours later, I still have not "won" a game of Rimworld, but my love of this game continues to grow.

Edit edit: 239 hours for my first win. I'm off-world!
