This is a WWII multiplayer shooter that was originally created as a Half-Life mod, and was given a standalone release as one of Steam's very first games. That alone gives it some trivia value!

The game's maps are set in the Western European portion of the war, and it has more of them than its sequel Day of Defeat: Source has out of the box, most notably paratrooper missions where one side deploys from landed gliders. It's still fun to play, despite showing its age and being kinda janky from attempting tactical combat with the original HL engine. It's rawer than DoD: Source with punchy, crunchy weapon sounds, and definitely rawer than your average modern multiplayer shooter. Its gameplay is an interesting fast-paced tactical-arcade mix with high recoil and no frills, straight out of the early 2000s and pretty refreshing compared to more modern shooters. You could sum it up as a class-based Counter-Strike equivalent with respawning, one that encourages a little more teamwork than CS does.

I would definitely recommend picking this up for 50 cents (or your local equivalent) during a sale and trying it out - not much to lose if you don't like it, after all. There's not very many players these days, which isn't surprising for a 20+ year-old game that was always in Counter-Strike's shadow. If you do check it out, you'll probably want to:
* download Sturmbot[sturmbot.org] to play with bots yourself,
* play on a server that has bots,
* bring friends,
or any combination thereof. However, as of mid-2023 there are a couple of pick-up game and scrim communities that are keeping the torch going. Hopefully they'll keep doing so.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Day_of_Defeat

"Day of Defeat is a team-based multiplayer first-person shooter video game set in the European theatre of World War II on the Western front. Originally a modification of the 1998 game Half-Life , the rights of the modification were purchased by Valve Corporation and released as a full retail title in 2003."

Still, I guess I should clarify that this is a standalone release. Thanks, abusive internet commenter!
