A very good rogue-like in the vein of The Binding of Isaac. A variety of characters with individual strengths and weaknesses keep the game fresh.

The game has full gamepad support and can also be used with a mouse and keyboard, as the original from Newgrounds. The visuals are remeniscent of old SNES or Sega Genesis graphics. It can be done in either full screen or windowed with various scales of screen size for the windowed modes.

Gameplay includes jump mechanics to battle airborne enemies as well as various boons either sold or picked up along the way.

All in all, I would recommend this game to anyone.

For the most part, this is a decent port of the iOS version of Ascension. There are problems, though, and I'll get into that in the list of "Cons" in this review.

Pros:
  • Grahics are decent, but not great. But this IS an iOS port we're talking about.
  • AI is relatively smart and has the knowledge to block you from getting a good card.
  • Expansions and promo packs are free for this version, while expansions costs $4 US and Promo Packs are $2 in the Apple App Store or Google Play.
  • Somewhat intuitive user interface, but with caveats as I'll explain later.

Cons:
  • As iOS is still only 4:3 ratio, so is this game. Luckily, I have a monitor that allows for the resolution being unstretched. Even so, it wouldn't be TOO much trouble to port some of the Android benefits over, would it?
  • As in both the iOS and Android versions: the longer the game, the more likely that an AI player will take for-freraking-ever to play a single card. Dudes...you've had two years to fix this on ALL PLATFORMS, yet it looks like you're spending most of your time on a VR version. VR is NOT a priority when you have people complaining over multiple platforms for several years on this problem. FIX IT!!!
  • The UI IS intuitive, but the one thing that was in both iOS and Android versions that was left out here was using Construct and Trophy Monster abilities without having to open the bloody area to do so. If the card I want is visible in that area without opening it, I shouldn't have to open the area to use it.

Even with all that, I would still recommend this. Even though it's not free, all expansion update have been free thus far. This is opposite to the mobile versions where the base game is free, but costs money to have all the expansions and promo packs. Even with its flaws, it's still decent enough for me to keep.

UPDATE: As Asmodee Digital is now the publisher, the game has improved dramatically. New points include:
  • The aspect ratio seems to be dynamic based on your monitor specs.
  • The AI players will no longer freeze the game outright and now has an indicator as to how far along the AI is to performing its next action.
  • New DLCs do cost money, but is in line with the same expansions on iOS and Android. All content before the aquisition by Asmodee Digital is still free.

I now recommend this game whole-heartedly. If you're a fan of the board game, get this for more fun.

Compared to the Automatron DLC, this is a much more involved storyline. Even more so with Nick Valentine as your companion.

This DLC is about 6 hours long (about 2-4 hours more with side quests). It includes new cooking recipes based on the new area as well as new gear and a new soft drink.

One more undocumented feature is an additional ability with one perk in each S.P.E.C.I.A.L. tree. For instance, Strong Back now has a 5th star which allows you to walk while encumbered for half the AP cost.

The price is a little steep, but the amount of content makes up for it. However, if you don't have the Season Pass, I'd wait for a sale.

The good news: I got this as part of the Season Pass...

The bad news: The content offered does NOT justify a $5 US price tag for people without the Season Pass. You can just get a mod from Nexus that does the same thing for virtually free.

If I had reviewed this a few months ago, I would have said to get it. However, with the revelation that the XL Pack with needed network code to make the game playable online is not coming to PC, no longer. So much so that I will be removing the game from my library once I do some new hardware testing.

UPDATE: It now looks like XL WILL be coming to PC after all. I will be trying out the beta for it later on and give my opinion of its current state. Until then, I still don't recommend this game at it's current price.

UPDATE 2: I tried the MKXL Public Beta and had a good time with it. Graphic fidelity had to be reduced somewhat to get a decent framerate online, but bearable. Gameplay was smooth and you could choose if you wanted to fight a found player based on network lag. Altogether decent. However, I don't know if this is true, but it's being said that Kombat Pack 2 is NOT included in this update and will require an additional transaction. I can understand this for new players as this was also the case on consoles, but I believe it should not be for people who: 1) purchased the game; 2) were lead to the conclusion that neither XL or KP2 would be available for PC; and 3) not notified in any way, shape or form until more than SIX MONTHS later that it would be available.

As MKXL (the netcode patch) will be available for free upon release for anyone with the main game, I can now recommend the game...but with caveats. Buying the game now, don't expect to get the Kombat Pack 2 stuff for free.

Early Access Review
I don't normally play games by Rockstar, but I do know that they are about quality control. As this is being made by a former Rockstar employee, I am not surprised that when a new version is released, it will be rock solid stable.

That being said, this is a bloody good game. Think "Descent meets Tron meets Borderlands", and that would sum up the experience I have with this game. Flying around ala Descent in a computer world ala Tron. Enemy ships will drop parts of its code for weapons, gadgets and other stuff for loot as well as much needed uranium (money and ship power) and carbon tubes (overclocking) like you get from the Borderlands franchise. Not to mention the vendors where you can buy and sell items. The challenge sphere is a nice addition and tests your mettle.

The one man Intravenous Software has done a very good job here. I will likely be doing a preview of the game on my YouTube channel in short order (am currently learning OBS intracacies as I will likely start streaming on Twitch.tv as well). A very good game and highly recommended.

Having played the Android version, I had high hopes for this game. I was not disappointed. The graphics are excellent, the physics are outstanding and there is Xbox 360 controller support so it get high marks on the playability fronts.

On the bad side, if you purchase any pinball tables for one platform, it does not translate over to the others. If I had been Farsight here, I would have had the tables connected to the e-mail address and allowed for cross-platform ownwership, but that may be difficult to implement. Not a REALLY big deal for me, but it could be a deal-breaker to others.

Oddly enough, when I did the review on Android Play Store, there were three tables that I was hoping would be released: Addams Family, Cyclone and Xenon. And my wush was granted with Season 4. This is such a big thing that, except for original tables made by others, the standbys Visual Pinball/VPMAME and Future Pinball are no longer on my radar.

An excellent game indeed.

So everyone knows, even though this is considered to be a "freemium" game, money is NOT required to have a very good loadout. Most "essential" items can be purchased through use of an in-game currency called GP, which is gained by playing. There are items that are not normally unlockable until you reach a certain level (i.e. Elemental Ammo types), but all weapons / gear is very well balanced. A very good game. Check my YouTube channel to see some of my gameplay to see what I mean. I highly recommend this game to anyone.

UPDATE: I've recently come back to this game and discovered the "Parity Patch": It brings the game in line with the PS4 version of the game and allows cross-platform play. It seems that the "Netwar" gameplay has left and therefore, on of the maps I enjoyed in my early days has left.

Stamina is no longer a thing, and you can now run for an unlimited time. Even though I found this realistic, I did find it annoying.

Leveling up is now very different. You used to have a slower leveling up thing and leveling up was required to purchase/rent certain weapons/gear with GP. Now, it is NOT required to unlock items. Also, levels are easier to obtain. Once you reach level 100, you may prestige. My past experience moved me to Prestige 6 rank upon playing the game again.

Also, Zen is no longer required to purchase items other than cosmetics.

The game is still great, and I will play more in upcoming weeks after I finish Nuka-World for Fallout 4.
