If you're looking to play it multiplayer with friends, go for the standalone expansion pack Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance and download FAF and whatnot (refer to my recommendation on that game). You do NOT need this game to play the SupComFA expansion pack.
If you're looking at this for the story, by all means dig in, especially if you find it discounted.
Such a good game. I actually played through this, which comes with 'Escape from Butcher Bay' before I bought it. Yep, I played through the entire two stories, THEN bought it.
Multiplayer is nonexistent.
The closest remake you'll get to the original Total Annihilation so far, this game does nearly everything right, but the engine lets it down on the larger size engagements (talking 1000's of units) but don't worry; it doesn't get laggy without reason.
Ideally, I recommend you find some mates to play it with, as the online is pretty average without FAForever, a 3rd party server browser, which I talk about in this blog post: http://tehrawt.blogspot.com/2011/12/supreme-commander-forged-alliance-is-on.html
Regardless, it's definitely worth a buy if you liked any of the other SupComs or the original TA.
