I was excited for the Steam controller (pre-ordered day 1, got it in first wave in mid-October), got it, played around with it, had a really hard time getting the hang of it, and wasn't sure it was going to work for me. However, I found it to be really comfortable and had gotten used to being able to reconfigure any input as any button, and realized I could no longer live without dual-stage triggers and left/right grip buttons. I continued to practice. I continued to tune the settings. Now, other controllers feel simple, and uncomfortable, and are frustrating to use, and all I want is my Steam controller. It just takes time, patience, and practice, as with anything new.

Some favorites of 2022
Great games in 2022! Here are some of my personal highlights.

- Binding of Isaac: Rebirth - I got a Steam Deck, and Isaac seemed like the perfect fit, so I dusted it off, and little-by-little I'm learning to like it again, but it's still not what it once was.
- Monster Hunter Rise - My personal GOTY. I played this more than any other game in 2022, and most of that was co-op with Molly, which was a real treat. There is no better co-op game. Steam Replay says it accounted for 17% of my playtime all year. :O
- Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade - It was an incredible year for Final Fantasy for me! I loved everything about Remake, and it was only made better by revisiting it at the end of the year to play InterMISSION just before Crisis Core.
- Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII- Reunion - A totally unexpected release; was nowhere near my radar, but capped my year with an incredible whirlwind of fun and emotions. I've rarely had more fun doing the optional grinding too; loved the format of those missions and getting super OP by the end. Can't wait for FF7 Rebirth!
- God of War Ragnarok - Not quite done, but pretty close. It's not reinventing itself by any means, but it is compelling and highly enjoyable nonetheless. It is the "bigger and more!" sequel you'd want. Whatever comes after this probably needs to clean up the systems a bit though; I didn't much like the equipment/upgrades system.
- Elden Ring - Really, really enjoyed what I played with Molly, but we set it down after release weekend when all the PVPers were starting to grief. Waiting on the co-op mod to mature a bit before going back.
- Cyberpunk 2077 - Not a 2022 release, but I waited for fixes, and glad I did. Coming to this was the inaugural game to christen my new PC, the 4090 was able to sing its praises with amazing framerates with full fidelity at 4K. I definitely found the fun too; there's a lot of fun progression and story to be had, I kinda want to do it all...
- Vampire Survivors - It showed up on Steam releases and I randomly bought it, this was well before it got any attention; knew there was something special, and now it's making GOTY lists from multiple outlets. Had a lot of fun, but it got harder, and I struggled to keep up with achievements.

Some favorites of 2021
Look, I skipped 2020. I think it's fair to assume why. ...but, I've flipped back through my history/brain to assemble some standouts below.

- Binding of Isaac: Rebirth - Guess what? Repentence ruined the game, and BoI is no longer fun.
- Resident Evil Village - My personal GOTY. I loved everything about it; maybe one of my favorite single-player games ever at this point. Made even better by sharing the experience with Molly.
- Age of Empires IV - I appreciated AoE/2/3 back in the day, but they never captured my interest as much as other RTS. This time around, I really learned what makes them great, and AoE4 is just built in a way that makes it particularly enjoyable to play. There's something very satisfying about it and I'm happy to keep it as a longhaul RTS in my repertoire.
- Demon's Souls - It helped me realize how impressive the PS5 is. Even though it's not my favorite of the Souls games, I still had a great time, and I still beat my face against the wall repeatedly trying to progress. I'm very proud to say I only used co-op help on one boss, and I didn't necessarily need it; I just hadn't tried it before and wanted to have that experience. That last boss probably took me 40 tries; it was very hard for my build.
- Gunfire Reborn - So, Isaac was ruined, but Gunfire kinda saved the day. It's Isaac FPS. It's co-op as hell, and it's -fun-. Oh, except for Bandit Tacticians. They are not fun. They are every swear word.
- Nier: Replicant - All the WTF wrapped in a beautiful musical score. Automata still stands as perhaps my favorite single-player experience, but Replicant was a wonderful supplement for that nostalgia, and played well.
- Deathloop - It's not as good as Prey. BUT, it's still scratching that same sim itch and has a super interesting premise and is mechanically fun. There is a bit too much hand-holding though, which really sours the potential for exploratory/emergent gameplay.
- It Takes Two - Um, probably the single best couch co-op action/adventure game ever made. The quality is all-around stunning. I saw some criticisms that the game runs a bit long, and I could probably see that, but Molly and I took our time with it, so it didn't drag too badly. We were always impressed and entertained with each session.
- Scarlet Nexus - I didn't finish it, but it's just a mechanically great and fun single-player game. I truly intend to go back and get this one done.
- Ori and the Will of the Wisps - A 2020 game that I finished early in 2021. Masterpiece.
- Tribes of Midgard - It is co-op fun. It did get repetitive and could really benefit from more variety and -- ideally -- faster "seasons", which was kind of a big pitch for that game. ...but when a season is once every 6 months, it's hard to stay excited.

Some favorites of 2020
I originally skipped this list. It was still a decent year for gaming though. It's going to be pretty unfair as I judge them a year beyond their due. Here's what I could recall:

- Binding of Isaac: Rebirth - I probably enjoyed any time I spent with it prior to March, 2021.
- Control - My first real taste of raytracing; incredible. The game was really fun, though I'm not SUPER in to the style of storytelling that Remedy does (Alan Wake). I still loved playing this though.
- Crown Trick - Now this was probably my real stand-in for addicting roguelike cravings. I could barely get enough of it, and I tempted to reinstall now at the end of 2021 and play more. Honestly though, give me a reason to play this again please!
- Death Stranding - I got tenosynovitis in my thumb that lasted most of 2020, so gamepad games were challenging or just not possible for a lot of the time, which caused me to fall of Death Stranding. I was really, really into what I got to play of it though, and hope for the Director's Cut on Steam before I try again.
- Far Cry 5 - Finished co-op with Dad. :)
- Hades - Yeah, it was everyone's GOTY. I played it a lot. It is great. The narrative is peak art. The gameplay is exceptional, but there is room for improvement in the design and art. Honestly, a little tired of Jen Zee's art style I think.
- Desperados III - Super fun taking my time and planning/executing very methodical tactical works of art.
- Risk of Rain 2 - Is good, and really enjoyed co-op. I want to like it more than I do. It's very good though. I think maybe simplistic graphics might be getting tiring. The recent technical leaps and bounds in graphics makes all these little indie games feel like they're distinctly missing something important, despite all their good qualities.
Notable GOTY (2016-2019)
Some favorites of 2019
There was a LOT this year, and it's so hard to narrow down the list...

- Binding of Isaac: Rebirth - Game of the year, every year. I mean, I didn't play it nearly as much this year, and I made very little progress toward 100% achievements, though I did fill in a couple; I think I'm 6 away from 100% now. Antibirth DLC will foil that anyway...
- STAR WARS Jedi: Fallen Order - My GOTY for 2019. Respawn continues to glow into a brighter beacon of high standards. Their gameplay has always been king, but Fallen Order is everything I love in a video game, and not only feels great to play, but looks phenomenal, and has captivating theatrical cutscenes.
- CODE VEIN - Anime Soulsbourne of exceptional quality, only made better with online co-op. Had a blast playing through this with Todd. What a surprise release.
- RESIDENT EVIL 2 - I didn't expect anything else to come along in 2019 as great as this, and that's saying a lot for a remake. Just great all around -- looks, plays, sounds, everything was just stellar, and I loved every minute of my time with it. Both the Leon and Claire playthroughs felt fresh and fun; this sets the bar high for remakes of classic games.
- Anno 1800 - I did, and will continue to, play the ♥♥♥♥ out of this game for years to come. The best Anno game ever made, with everything I could want and more. Co-op is practically required in order to manage things... at least for me.
- Darksiders III - Huge, long-time fan of this series, and I think Gunfire Games did a great job picking up the reins from Vigil. Satisfying game through and through, and I'm looking forward to going back in to the DLC.
- Assassin's Creed Odyssey - a 2018 game, but I played it in 2019. There is so much to do, and so much to see, and it's definitely a slow burn, but I really don't tire of it. Really love the direction this series has taken with Origin, and Odyssey is an even greater triumph.
- I could probably double this list, but I really need to stop somewhere...

2019 Honorable Mentions
- Remnant: From the Ashes - Fantastic co-op experience, and was happy to see Gunfire Games have more success after Darksiders III.
- Celeste - Not a 2019 game, but I finally finished it this year. Well, the base game anyway; it's very difficult, and not platforming difficulty is not the type of thrill I seek, but the game is good enough for someone like me to stick through to the end, even if I didn't go hard after strawberries, or the epilogue stuff.
- Mindustry - This is like a minimalist version of Factorio, and scratches many of the same itches (though Factorio is still king). But damn, this game is super satisfying. I put a solid 20 hours into it, and will probably continue.
- Autonauts - A crafting game where you program bots to do all the heavy lifting! Very impressively implemented, and offered a spin on a genre that I'd not seen done before, so landed as my nomination for Steam Awards 2019 innovative gameplay.

Some favorites of 2018
- Binding of Isaac: Rebirth - Game of the year, every year. I'm so close to 100% achievements, I can taste it (98%; 8 shy as of 2018-12-17). Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like it will be possible to finish in 2018, but just like with Afterbirth+, I imagine I'll get close enough to 100% just as the official Antibirth DLC strikes, setting me back on the path for chasing 100% achievements for another year or two; the cycle continues.
- Monster Hunter: World - A dream come true to have this, not just on a platform with a standard controller, but on PC to boot! Easily sank a couple hundred hours in under a month. Truly made better with friends, and possibly the best representation of co-op gameplay I could imagine.
- Far Cry 5 - UPlay made the coop process more difficult than necessary, but playing online with my dad was pretty dang cool.
- Final Fantasy XV - The PC release is tremendous. Between watching Kingsglaive (twice) and taking my time to pace through the story/content of the game, it's one of my favorite experiences of 2018, even outside of games. Comraderie and humanity are the central themes throughout, and this game delivered not only in story and presentation, but was really fun to play. I'll never forget this one.
- God of War (PS4) - Story, presentation, and gameplay all top notch. I am a good way through, but have not yet finished; Monster Hunter kind of interrupted things a bit, so I intend to get back to finishing it out, hopefully before the end of 2018.
- Assassin's Creed: Origins - This game is from last year, but I played it this year. It was a slow starter for me. I've a bit of a complicated relationship with AC games. I often can't find the mindset to settle into them, but when I do, I devour. As I did with earlier entries in the series (I completed Brotherhood, Revelations, and III back-to-back-to-back in like a week or two), I really bit down hard on this game, and pushed through. I'm close to the end, and I really enjoy and appreciate the formula changes they brought with this sort-of rebirth to the series. I'm excited for Odyssey.

Some favorites of 2017
- Binding of Isaac: Rebirth - Game of the year, every year.
- Divinity: Original Sin II - One of the best CRPGs ever, made better with co-op and meaningful replayability.
- The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - Unbridled, captivating joy of emergence.
- Heroes of the Storm - I still just play it a lot; more than I should.
- Prey - Perhaps my favorite "simulation action" game of all time; truly a surprise.
- Super Mario Odyssey - So much to do, so much to see, so what's wrong with throwing a cappy.
- Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Wildlands - Just great co-op fun.
- Cuphead - Beautiful, unforgiving, but surprisingly fair.
- Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus - So much WTF. Fun as hell. (I finally finished it all off, and chased some more achievements, in 2018. Well worth going back to.)
- Opus Magnum - I enjoy the main alchemy puzzles, but somehow Sigmar's Garden stuck with me really well.
- Nier: Automata - I wish I could convince more people to really play this through to completion; it has more to offer than can really be explained.
- Monolith - If Isaac is a slot machine, then Monolith is blackjack table.

Some favorites of 2016
- Binding of Isaac: Rebirth - Game of the year, every year.
- DOOM (2016) - Perhaps the best single-player shooter experience ever made.
- Hitman (2016) - Emergent gameplay at its best.
- Heroes of the Storm - I still just play it a lot; more than I should.
- Titanfall 2 - Thoroughly enjoable and interesting single-player campaign.
- Hitman: Absolution - I'm late to the party, but fini
